There are several different types of camera shots in photography. All shots or series of shots will have a central subject within it. The type of shot depends primarily on the location of the subject in relation to the rest of the shot and how close the camera is to the subject.

Wide Shots

A wide shot, also called a long shot, is one where the subject is completely in the shot and has a wide amount of space on both sides. The primary objective of the most basic wide shot is to capture the entire subject, especially if the subject is a person. A very wide shot distances itself even further from the subject, usually making the subject barely visible but still centered in the environment; this type is often mistaken for a regular wide shot. An extreme wide shot is so far away from the subject that it isn't even visible and the real subject is the surroundings.

Mid Shots

A mid shot is very close to how the viewer would actually see the subject in real life. It is close enough to the subject to show more detail than a wide shot but is still a comfortable distance from it. When the subject is a person, a mid shot usually shows that person from the waist up. If the shot moves in a little closer, showing the focal point of the subject (like the person's face) while still being comfortably close, this becomes a medium close-up and the closest one can get without becoming a full close-up.

Close-ups

A close-up shot is one that puts the focal point of the subject so it takes up as much of the shot as possible while still being completely in the shot. The purpose is usually to show as much detail as possible in the focal point, like emotion on the face. An extreme close-up takes the shot even closer to get extreme detail of areas like the eyes or nose. There is usually very little use for an extreme close-up.

Cut Shots

In a series of shots, a cutaway shot is one that moves away from the current subject or action and focuses on a different subject entirely. Its primary purpose is to serve as a bridge or buffer between shots or add additional information to the series. A cut-in is similar, but it shifts the attention to another area of the subject besides the main focal point, like a person's hands.

Other Shots

A two shot has two subjects in the picture and is usually framed much like a mid shot with both subjects. An over-the-shoulder shot is the subject with another person in the shot being viewed from behind; this usually requires the subject to be framed more to the side. A point-of-view shot is meant to view something from the subject's perspective; this usually requires the subject to have something in the shot (like the hands) to indicate the shot is being viewed by the subject and not just the photographer.

Photo Printing with Special Effects

Most photo-editing programs have filters or plug-ins, like starbursts or glowing edges, that you can use to alter the mood of your photograph. Digital photography and photo-editing programs make it easy to experiment with these effects. If you have a professional program for photo editing, such as Adobe Photoshop, start with some easy alterations, then produce high-quality effects with mattes and layers.

Antiquing

A simple way to give your photo printouts an old-fashioned look is to apply the antique effect. Make sure to duplicate the photo before you begin, so you have a copy of the original. The antique application will fade the colors and bump up the yellow hue, giving your photo a "washed out" look typical of old color photographs. You can recreate this look on your own in Photoshop. Look under "Image" for the "Adjustments" menu. Then desaturate the image colors in the hue/saturation box, heighten the contrast in the brightness/contrast box and tone down the green, blue and cyan in the color balance box until you achieve the desire effect.

Posterize

Posterize colors and convert your photo to "pop art" mode. The posterize effect reduces grades of similar color to one flat color, resulting in color blocks similar to those found in a litho or screen print. Some photo-editing programs have a posterize option. In Photoshop, you can control the levels of posterization under "Image" and "Adjustments" and "Posterize." The levels of posterization go from 2 to 255. Increasing levels will bring your photo closer to its original coloring.

Blurred Background

A blurred background is an effect often used on portraits or close-ups of objects, like food or flowers. To get a blurred background, you need to separate the foreground object from the background using a matte. This can be done in photo-editing programs like Photoshop by outlining the foreground object with a pen tool, making a selection of the outline, and then using the eraser and brush tool in mask mode to soften and tighten your mask for your matte. Once you have your object selected, copy and paste the selected pixels to a new layer and apply a gaussian blur to the background layer behind it. Use the blur and eraser tools to soften the edges of the foreground image against the background.

Color Adjust

Changing the color of your photo can be as easy as applying a simple "color boost" effect in your photo-editing program. If you want to adjust specific colors to change the tone of your photo, you need a professional photo-editing program like Photoshop. Experiment with the color balance box by changing the levels of red, green and blue in RGB mode or cyan, magenta, yellow and black in CMYK mode. Adjusting the contrast, levels and saturation of your photo in the adjustment menu boxes can boost the output of faded images and will transform the color of your photo for a vivid final printout. Save and print your files at 300 dpi (dots per inch) or higher and use premium photo paper for your printouts in order to capture the detail of your special effects.

How to Make a High Key Lighting Studio

High key lighting is a quality of light that is popular in fresh, contemporary photography, but is not a new concept "If I had but one backdrop to use for portraiture, I would choose a simple roll of white seamless paper." says editorial photographer Zack Arias. Legendary photographers such as Richard Avedon and Herb Ritts also pioneered the clean, high-key photography look. High key is when the quality of light is a vivid, pure white that essentially blows out any shadow detail. High-key lighting invokes a positive tone and is generally used when photographing children, high school seniors and newborns. High key is also used for fashion and product photography to effectively showcase what is being advertised. Shooting studio high key is dependent on developing your knowledge of exposure values and having the proper equipment in your studio.

Instructions

    1

Set up your high-key studio room. Your space should be at about 20 by 20 with ceilings at least 10 feet tall. The walls must be a neutral color, preferably white. Color walls will produce undesirable color casts that the camera will pick up. Dark walls will absorb light and create shadows.

    2

Mount the white seamless paper to a background support system. The light will bounce off the backdrop and will eliminate any shadows from your subject. When positioning your subject, make sure to position them at least 2 to 3 feet away from the background.

    3

Position your strobes. Two strobes should be directed toward the seamless background on either side of your subject, at a 45 degree angle. The umbrellas will serve in bouncing light, as the quality of light is stronger with umbrella modifiers.

    4

Position your fill light and key light. The key light will be on a 45-degree angle to the left of your subject. The fill light will be 45 degrees to the right. Both lights should be 6 to 7 feet away from your subject. The reason there is a fill light is to fill in the key-light shadows. Modify the light with soft boxes. You will need to reposition the strobes until the distance and size of the light is desirable. Meter each of your lights separately with your light meter.

    5

Fine tune your studio lights, Use a silver reflector on your subject if more light is needed. Set the backdrops' light output one f-stop higher than your key light. Your key light may be at f8, therefore your backdrop light should be f5.6. In larger studios you may see better results with f stops exceeding one stop--in some cases two to three stops.

How to Touch up Digital Pictures

Digital cameras makes taking pictures a snap. Even if you arent talented behind the lens of a camera, you can make up for it with a photo-editing program. The industry standard in graphic software is Adobe Photoshop but many other programs will also allow you touch up your digital pictures.

Instructions

    1

Open a picture in your photo-editing program for tweaking. Even the most basic software programs allow you to make flattering adjustments and corrections in addition to adding preset borders and captions.

    2

Work with exposure problems first. Before you can fine tune color or contrast, you must be able to see the photo. With the lightness/darkness feature selected, move the sliders until the image is visible. If your program offers a middle tone adjustment, use it to lighten and darken midrange shadows.

    3

Remove blemishes and wrinkles from faces. In the case of portraits, the subjects usually want to look their best, even if it means correcting some minor flaws. Most programs have a clone tool. Take a sample of pixels from a nearby area and fill in the blemish. For a flattering look, set the opacity to 20 percent or less and repeat the fill until you have just the right amount.

    4

Adjust the overall color of the photograph after you correct the exposure and remove artifacts. Some programs have an auto-adjustment color feature that selects a common hue and saturation level. Since it isnt always accurate, use the manual adjustment feature if youre not happy with the result. Remember that human skin tones often look better with a slight gold color correction.

    5

Enhance outlines on a blurred picture with built-in sharpening tools. In Photoshop, you have a handful of filters that assist you in sharpening but in other editing programs, you may only have one. Strive for a happy medium between a distinct outline without adding excessive graininess. Sharpening high resolution pictures is more effective because there are more pixels to adjust.

    6

Crop your photo after all the touch-up adjustments are complete. If you crop too soon, you will be working with fewer pixels and the image integrity may suffer. With each adjustment to a digital photo, it will lose some of the resolution.

    7

Most programs have a clone tool.

    7

Add a border or vignette if desired, and save your new digital image in a separate file for printing or publishing on the web.
