Alternative Processes to Polaroid

In the 60 years that Polaroid marketed instant cameras, theirs was a virtual stranglehold on the concept and implementation of instant photography. Kodak attempted to sidestep Polaroid's patents, to disastrous effect, and Fujifilm licensed the technology for their own camera line. The simplicity and quality of the cameras means many are still in working condition years after Polaroid ceased compatible film production.

The End of Production

Polaroid announced in 2008 that it was ending instant film production. Half a million packs of remaining stock were purchased by an Austrian reseller, and the countdown was on, since, like all silver halide films, Polaroid film is perishable, degrading with age. Some photographers took this aging in stride and the look of expired Polaroid film is popular with those who follow the "lomography" art movement, which explores the inherent quirks and limitations of analog photography.

Fujifilm

Fujifilm had a line of instant film products on the market when Polaroid sued Kodak and subsequently made a deal involving sharing of technology, allowing Fujifilm instant films and cameras to continue. Still manufactured today, the Instax line of cameras and film are integral-type films, requiring no photographer intervention to process. These films are not compatible with Polaroid cameras, but some older cameras can use FP100-series pack films, still made by Fujifilm.

The Impossible Project

After the announcement of the end of manufacture of Polaroid film, a group of investors, including some former Polaroid employees, bought the equipment and rights to revive Polaroid technology. Dubbed the Impossible Project, their mandate was to rescue the estimated 300 million functioning Polaroid cameras from obsolescence. In 2010, compatible black-and-white films for SX70 and Type 600 cameras were released, and since then, the Impossible Project has added color film to its line. Plans continue to revive more instant film formats.

The Future

Interest in older photographic systems is growing as an alternative to the prevalence of digital photography. The founders of the Impossible Project have been involved with the roots of the lomography movement and look to their new films as art creation tools. Although traditional uses of instant photography -- for forensic use, as an example -- has been supplanted by digital systems, Fujifilm still markets Instax film and cameras as an easy and immediate system for consumers; however, the survival of alternative instant films will depend on the continued interest in retro photo technology.

How to Photograph a Structural Arson Fire

Because fire is so elemental and powerful, it is no wonder that photographers seek to capture its nature on film. However, several technical challenges make it difficult to do. Most photographers, especially beginners, attempt to photograph fire as if it were the same as anything else and are disappointed with the results. When photographing arson, these disappointing results can mean a lost court case, so it's even more important to get good results. By following a few technical guidelines, you can produce sharp, informative images of structure fires.

Instructions

    1

Set your camera on a tripod in a sturdy location. You want to be as close to the fire as you can without risking your safety or the health of your equipment, but not so close as to keep you from capturing the full view of the structure.

    2

Look through the viewfinder and adjust the camera to compose your image. You want to be sure to get the whole structure in the frame.

    3

Zoom in your lens to fill the viewfinder with the fire.

    4

Take a meter reading by depressing the shutter halfway.

    5

Set your camera's aperture to the one suggested by the camera's meter.

    6

Set your shutter speed to a slow, but not too slow, setting -- between one second and 1/30 second. If you want sharp, clear, frozen flames, use a faster shutter speed, but if you want to create a blur of fire, use a slower shutter speed.

    7

Press the shutter to make an image.

    8

Look at the image you just shot to check the exposure settings you chose and adjust your exposure, if necessary, based on the results.

    9

Continue to photograph the structure fire with the same meter settings, even if the camera suggests other settings.

Software for Digital Black & White Photography

A multitude of photo editing software exists in the marketplace that allows for black and white conversion of images. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find a photo editing program that does not convert to black and white. Choosing a photo editing program that suits you and your photographic needs can be a challenge with so many possible options. Understand your desired outcome for working with black and white digital images first before you begin researching your software programs.

Professional Editing Applications

Professional photo editing software programs will provide the most in-depth methods for converting color images to black and white. Adobe's Photoshop and Corel's Paint Shop Photo Pro are industry standards for professional editing. These programs provide multiple methods of removing the color from an image, which may be ideal if you are editing for professional or fine art purposes. Having control of the various color channels, even with the actual color data removed, will allow you to apply intricate edits to the gray tones of a black and white image. Such a program will provide a variety of options for printing images, giving you greater control over the necessary settings for creating a fine art print.

Consumer Photo Editing Programs

If you enjoy working with black and white photography, but do not need the depth and scope of a professional program, a consumer editing application will suite your needs. These programs offer black and white conversions with some degree of tonal editing to enhance certain areas of the image. Consumer programs employ an easy to understand user-interface, and the learning curve is much smaller for these programs. Such programs are usually bundled with a large degree of consumer-based editing functions, like scrap-booking applications, slide-show creation and fun graphic overlays. They allow for a great deal of creativity when working with images without having to understand professional graphic design programs. Hundreds of programs are on the market for consumer-based photo editing and TopTenReviews.com offers an excellent review of the most commonly used programs.

Free Editing Software

Simple black and white conversions can also be accomplished with free photo editing software, such as Google's Picasa. This application is downloaded directly from the Internet and does provide special effects buttons for black and white conversion. The program has a limited capacity for controlling the toning of the image so keep this in mind when choosing a free editing program. Picasa makes online photo sharing easy with uploading and gallery features that are easy to use and send to your friends and family.

Choosing the Proper Programs

Choosing a photo editing software program depends on several factors. Understand your computer abilities and the learning curve necessary for using the program. Photoshop is a powerful, professional-level program and will take a longer time to learn than a consumer-based program, such as Serif's PhotoPlus. Consider your long-term goals for photo editing when choosing a program. If you wish to build a solid background in photo editing and might be considering a career in digital photography, the money and time investment for Photoshop would be justified. If you intend on working with just your family photo albums in a black and white capacity, than a free program like Picasa will suit most of your needs. Know your computer's capacity for working with these software programs as well. Photoshop requires a great deal of processing power and RAM memory, particularly if you are working with large, uncompressed fine art prints. An older computer with limited processing power simply can not handle a program such as Photoshop.
