How to Take Still Life Pictures

Still-life photography may be one of the first lessons in a photography class and can be more difficult than you might imagine. Though easier than landscape, pet and children photography, it is also a challenge to render still-life objects interesting with your camera. For good still-life photography, you want a good balance between subject matter, angles and lighting.

Instructions

    1

Find inspiration from professional still-life pictures. Look for those that catch your eye and appeal to you in some way. Pay attention to shadow, subject matter and angles that the photographer used. This could help inspire your own photography.

    2

Choose your subject matter and objects to be photographed. Keep the still-life picture simple, with minimal objects; no more than two, possibly three. Gather together a variety of objects to practice photographing fruit, vegetables, flowers, books and figurines. The types of subjects you choose will vary, depending on the style you are aiming for.

    3

Arrange your subjects where you will be photographing them. They may be stacked on top of each other, if you are photographing books; or, you might place a smaller object leaning against a larger object. Try different angles from which to photograph.

    4

Choose a setting for your still-life photography. This might be a lightbox with lamps that create a soft, natural look. For a lightbox, you want to use at least two lamps; one for the strongest amount of light, and the other for filler. Lighting options include strobe lights, LED's and speed lights. For natural light, you might set up the subjects near an open window; if so, pay attention to shadows from outdoors or from the sun. Either way, choose backgrounds that are solid-color or simple, which will not detract from your still life.

    5

Practice taking pictures of your objects with different lenses, in different lighting, with a variety of shadows, backgrounds and angles. When using natural light, take photos during various times of day until you are satisfied with the effect.

Emo Photo Effects

As a result of the ever-expanding presence of social-media websites, such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Tumblr, emo photography styles have become as recognizable as the black nail polish, tight clothing and sweeping bangs of the image subjects. You can tap into this trend and give your photos an emo look by using effects from free photography software and image-editing websites.

Black & White

Nothing conveys the melancholy of emo culture like a black and white photo. This emo photo effect can be achieved by applying a black and white filter or decreasing the image's saturation. You can heighten the result by tuning the photo's contrast level. Create high contrast by brightening highlights and darkening shadows to give your image a moody, dramatic feel. Picasa photo-editing software, which is a free download from Google, allows users to easily create this emo effect.

Color Play

Go a step beyond status updates and use your profile image to convey your mood; after all, emo is slang for emotional. Using your favorite photo-editing program, add an emo photo effect like color tint, and let the world know how you feel. Tint your photo red if you are angry, green if you are envious or blue if you are calm. If you feel especially emotional, use Picnik's Duo Tone effect and apply a two-color tint.

Stickers

Think of stickers on images as tattoos on someone who is emo. Use Picnik to create this photo effect and access sticker designs under its "Create" tab. You can add image stickers from categories including Animals, Smilies, Loosey Design, Symbols, Solar System and Mediaeval. Adjust the size, position, color and fade of the sticker using the Sticker Properties box. Also, you can flip and rotate the sticker or alter advance blend modes using a drop down menu.

Photo Frames

If you do not want to add an emo photo effect that alters your image's original integrity by adjusting color or contrast, then apply a photo frame. Imikimi offers a wide selection of photo frames that can add an emo effect to any image. Some frames are animated, some feature quotes and others feature graphics like skulls and bleeding hearts. Once you register to create a free Imikimi account, you can select your desired emo photo frame, upload your photo to the frame and share your creation with friends.

DIY Wide Angle Lens

Camera lenses come in a wide array of types, sizes and brands. One thing that they all have in common is a hefty price tag. Most amateur photographers do not have a few hundred dollars to lay down on a lens that will only be used every once in awhile. There are a few tips on how to make your own wide angle lens. It will not give you exactly the same results as those expensive lenses, but you will get unique effects without bleeding your wallet dry.

What Is a Wide-Angle Lens?

Wide angle lenses are all the rage with photographers nowadays. With a wide angle lens, you stretch the perspective, making the object that is closer to the lens appear much bigger than it actually is. A wide angle lens also allows you to fit a lot of things into one image. The benefits of a wide angle lens give the photographer more options when capturing shoots. If used properly, a wide angle lens can create a dramatic and exciting image.

DIY Wide-Angle Lens

To make your own wide angle lens you will need a peephole, spray adhesive, black spray paint, black foam sheets in two different diameters--which can be purchased at any craft store--and some PVC pipe. Peepholes come in either 160 viewing angle or 200 viewing angle. Purchase the 160 for a wide angle effect and the 200 for a fish-eye effect.

First you will need to build up the diameter of the peephole so that it fits into the PVC pipe. This can be accomplished by cutting strips into the foam. Start by cutting one strip at a time. The first strip should be cut from the thinner foam. The second two strips should be cut from the thicker foam. Use the spray adhesive to glue the strips of foam to the peephole. The peephole needs to fit snug into the PVC pipe. Use more or less strips of foam to achieve this. Cut the PVC pipe as long as the lens of your camera and peephole. Glue the lens fitting inside the PVC pipe. Spray paint the PVC pipe black to give it a more professional look. Allow to dry completely before moving on. Once dry, push the foam-covered peephole down into the PVC pipe and attach it to the camera barrel. Your new homemade wide angle lens is now ready to use.

Photo Montage Tutorial

A photomontage begins with a collection of photos, often with a related subject or theme. The photos are then arranged together to create an image compilation. The art of photomontage dates back to after the first world war, when the method of creation involved cutting and pasting photographs together. Today, modern image editing software plays an important role in creating a photomontage. Photomontages vary in size from a small collection of images to a poster-sized display.

Instructions

A photomontage begins with a collection of photos.

Assemble a collection of several images with a similar theme or subject. You may choose to compile photos of each member on your cheerleading squad, images of your child at different stages in her life, or action shots of your pets. Choose photos that vary in size and depth or keep them uniform in appearance.

Scan your images to create digital files. Save your files in the same folder with the JPEG file extension. Title your folder Photomontage Images. Once you have your collection of JPEG images, open them all in your image editing software.

Consider the content of each image and edit it according to what you want to display in your photo montage. Crop out the unnecessary elements. Use a selection tool to select the part of the image you do not want to use and delete this portion of the photo. As an alternative, simply use the eraser tool to erase backgrounds in images.

Import each of your images into the same file. You may do this by choosing "File > Import" or by dragging your images into the same file. If your image editing software allows it, keep each image on a different layer. This will allow for ease of selection and positioning later. Name each layer to help you more easily identify the photo involved. Save your file as Photomontage.

Position each photo within the montage. Resize, rotate, flip or crop images to make them fit better into the mix. If your photos each have their own layer, you will need to select each layer before moving the image. Play around and create different combinations of positions until you create the montage you like best.

Add effects to the edges of the photos within the montage.
Add effects to the edges of the photos within the montage.

Apply an effect to the edges of your photos to create a blended photomontage. Set your eraser tool at 10 percent and lightly erase around the edge of the image. This will add a sheer edge that will blend easily into the other images. You can go a different route by adding a distinct border to the edge of each of your photos. This will set the photos off as individuals. If your editing software allows, experiment with photo filters, color balance or color scale. Try turning half of your images into black and white images and leaving the other half in color.

Assemble a collection of several images with a similar theme or subject. You may choose to compile photos of each member on your cheerleading squad, images of your child at different stages in her life, or action shots of your pets. Choose photos that vary in size and depth or keep them uniform in appearance.

Use computer software to create your montage.

Scan your images to create digital files. Save your files in the same folder with the JPEG file extension. Title your folder Photomontage Images. Once you have your collection of JPEG images, open them all in your image editing software.

    3
Crop photos creatively for a unique effect.

Consider the content of each image and edit it according to what you want to display in your photo montage. Crop out the unnecessary elements. Use a selection tool to select the part of the image you do not want to use and delete this portion of the photo. As an alternative, simply use the eraser tool to erase backgrounds in images.

    4
Save your montage as one file.
Save your montage as one file.
