How to Publish a Memory Book of Photos

Publishing your own memory book of photographs is an excellent way to preserve your precious memories and commemorate the milestones of your family's life. Using a print-on-demand service from an online photo book publishing company is an affordable and easy way to create a beautiful book of your photos. Indulge your creativity and add text, quotes, dates and graphics to your book to enhance the moments preserved in time through your images.

Instructions

    1

Gather all your images into one folder on your computer. If you have only physical prints, use a flatbed scanner and make digital copies of your images. A digital scanner can be rented by the hour at most office supply stores that provide printing and copying services.

    2

Check the image file size by opening the image in a photo editing program and checking the image size, usually found under the "Edit" section. Be sure your digital files are a high-quality, high resolution scan of approximately 300 DPI (dots per inch) or higher. A setting of 300 DPI will ensure that the image has enough data present to print a clear image with no distortions.

    3

Review your images in the editing program to make sure they are not too light or dark and are cropped in the desired manner, removing any unsightly objects in the images located near the edges of the photograph.

    4

Choose an online printer of digital photo books that uses a simple uploading method and prints a high-quality, glossy photo book, preferably hardback for preservation of the memory book. Be sure to research the company and read reviews written by past users. Pay attention to the user reviews regarding the paper and image reproduction quality as these are the major elements that affect the quality and longevity of your memory book.

    5

Upload your images following the instructions provided by the print-on-demand service. Most programs will allow you to upload directly from your computer and will walk you through all the proper steps to creating your book.

    6

Add special phrases, dates, names and graphics to your pages if the printer will allow you to make such additions to your book. Many standard desktop publishing programs will allow you to convert graphics and text to digital image files that you can incorporate in your memory book, adding a special personal touch to your publication.

    7

Follow the remaining steps and print your memory album. Print a test book before placing any large orders to be sure you are satisfied with the quality and presentation of the finished product.

Photo shoots can seem fun, exciting and glamorous -- but they require a lot of work, preparation and organization. It is essential to properly manage a photo shoot in order to keep the team on task, fulfill client requirements and help everything run smoothly. The photographer or production assistant -- or both -- may be responsible for managing the photo shoot and keeping track of models, makeup artists, hairstylists, clothing or product stylists, assistants and studio time. With a little advanced planning, you can manage your photo shoot smoothly and effectively to get the job done.

Instructions

    1

Create a call sheet with important information. A call sheet should list the name of the client or shoot project, the photographer, all team members, where the shoot is taking place, the general schedule of the shoot, what time all team members need to arrive -- this may be different for different people -- and what needs to be accomplished. All participants in a photo shoot generally expect to receive a call sheet several days prior to the actual shoot.

    2

Confirm with each member of the team the night before. This is imperative for avoiding -- or fixing -- last-minute cancellations and problems. If you sense any hesitation from a team member the night before, ask directly if they intend to show up to the shoot. Missing an essential member of the team can often prevent a photo shoot from taking place.

    3

Call the studio to confirm space and equipment. If the shoot is taking place at the photographer's personal studio, verify that all of the necessary equipment is available, including clothing racks or product shelves, accessories or set components.

    4

Make a list of each look or set-up with all of the components and put them in order. If you are shooting clothing, products or food, it is essential to know what goes with what before you get to the studio. Create visuals on your computer grouping items together for each shot to make managing even easier.

    5

Give your team time checks. It is essential to keep the entire team on track and make sure nobody spends too much time on one single shot. Let team members know when they are approaching the time limit for a shot or if you think they are running late.

    6

Make it clear how payment is being handled. Many clients, particularly in the fashion and advertising industries, do not pay for photography jobs until 30 to 90 days after the shoot. However, models usually expect to be paid the same day unless you have made prior arrangements with the agent. Make sure you go over each team member's payment expectations before the day of the shoot to prevent any problems from arising.

The photo booth has been an American cultural icon for decades. Dotting summer boardwalks, county fairgrounds and shopping malls, photo booths allow American teenagers, lovers and tourists alike to snap instantaneous photo strips. Click an entry to view the address of the booth, a description of the venue, map links and the price per strip.

    2

Search Google Maps (see Resource) to find restaurants and bars with photo booths inside. Insert the words photo booth and near and your exact address into the Search Maps box.

    3

Locate a recognized photo booth provider with guaranteed quality equipment through the International Photobooth Association (see Reference). Browse the Members Locations for recognized members, which are required to own at least two Photoworks Interactive Model 12 digital photo booths, the highest-quality digital booth. Rentals and sales are available through the members.

How to Create an Original Web Banner

Creating an original and artistic web banner is fun and easy to do with GIMP 2.6. Of course there are a number of ways to do this, but most of them require artistic talent. However, GIMP has a tool called fractal explorer that will allow you to create web banners easily and requires absolutely no drawing or painting skills. With Fractal Explorer, all you need is some patience, since you may have to restart a number of times to get a design you like. This article explores using Fractal Explorer to create original, artistic web banners quickly and easily.

Instructions

    1
    Open Blank Banner

Open a blank banner in GIMP. Select NEW and then select the WEB BANNER template from the drop-down menu. There are two sizes; I selected the larger size for this article, but your size will really be decided by your overall website design

    2
    Fractal Explorer

Open the Fractal Explorer from the FILTERS/RENDER menu. Notice this is a COMPLEX tool with three tabs. The tool defaults to the PARAMETERS tab. As you change any of the sliders or FRACTAL type the preview of the painting will show in the preview window. After selecting your fractal design you can fine-tune the display using these controls.

    3
    Select Design

Click on the FRACTALS tab and select a design you like from the 30 available designs. I chose the snowflake design since winter is coming. Once you have adjusted the colors and parameters you can save your design as a new fractal so you will have it available for the future.

    4
    Adjust Colors

After selecting your design, click on the COLORS tab to create the color for your web banner. Again, the overall design of your web page will help you choose the color you want. Use the sliders to get the colors you want. Change the sine and cosine functions to preview the impact on your design. If you want to save your design as a fractal, click on PARAMETERS and save the design. You can also now fine-tune your fractal as far as position, and when you have it the way you want it, click OK. The fractal is now saved in your blank web banner window.

    5
    Add Text

Use the GIMP text editor to add text to your design or any other GIMP tools to fine-tune and adjust your web banner. When you are done, save your file as a JPEG which you can then add to your web page as a banner.

    6
    Final Banner

The final image is a web banner that was made in about 20 minutes. I'm sure with a little thought, experimentation and creative juice, we can all do better than this. Fractals are a simple way to make original artwork for a web banner, and GIMP makes it easy with multiple banner formats and a wide variety of controls to adjust color, text and backgrounds.
