DIY 4X5 Pinhole Camera

With the rising popularity of digital cameras, film cameras are becoming less common. Pinhole cameras, however, can be a way to remember the first film camera, exposing the light directly onto light sensitive paper. Get fun pictures and a fun experience with your very own pinhole camera.

Instructions

How to make a pinhole camera

    1

Paint the lid of the paint can black on the inside and outside. Paint the can as well to prevent light from getting inside.

    2

Cut a small square hole in the bottom of the can. Fold a piece of aluminum foil in layers to cover this hole. Poke a hole in the aluminum foil with the needle and tape it in place with the black tape. Use the paint and the tape to make sure that no light gets inside the can around the foil.

    3

Make a shutter cover from foil. Tape it closed on two ends, but make it removable on one side. Attach it to the can over the pinhole.

    4

Go inside a light safe room and open the photo paper. Cut it into 4-by-5-inch squares and tape a square to the inside of the lid with the emulsion facing the pinhole. Tape the lid to the can with black tape, making sure there are no cracks that would allow light inside the can.

    5

Take the camera into the light and aim it at your subject. Move the shutter aside for 2 minutes in bright sun, up to 8 minutes in dim areas. Then close the shutter and take the camera back into a dark room and develop the paper.
