The Components of Translucent Lighting

Translucent lighting, whether in a photography studio or as a decor accent, is a method of diffusing light to give a more natural appearance to an object or area. Architects use translucent lighting diffusers to design brightly lit, glarefree structures. Interior environments with translucent lighting effects possess a shimmering quality.

Light Source

You can use photographic strobe lights, standard lightbulbs and strong spotlights as light sources. The stronger the wattage of the light source, the broader the diffusion spectrum of the light. Conversely, a low-wattage bulb combined with a translucent filter can give the effect of candlelight or dusk.

Translucent Material

Translucent material is partially reflective and opaque. Frosted glass, satin cloth and special translucent fabrics are designed to diffuse the light from the source over the surface of the material on the inside -- the side facing the source -- while allowing enough of the light through the material to create a glow.

Distance

How close or how far the translucent lighting is from the object or area will affect the softness of the lighting. The closer the light source, the more clearly the object will be lit. Using several translucent lights set at different distances can create the illusion of additional depth by providing multiple focal points.

Angle

Different angles will produce different depths and shadow lengths from objects. Changing the angle of the translucent lighting can change the direction of a shadow, even though the light is more evenly diffused than a spot light source. The shadows created will not have the harshness of those that a spotlight creates, but will prevent the object or area from appearing to be visually flat as it would with nondiffused bright lights.
