Lights to Make a Candle-Lit Portrait

Use candlelight to create dramatic portraits with a warm glow and intense shadows. These photographs are appropriate for birthday celebrations -- to capture the candle-lit cake -- or for romantic portrait pictures such as engagements or wedding photos. You can also use this effect to create a dramatic statement in any photo. Always keep safety as a top priority when working with an open flame and be sure to keep a fire extinguisher on hand in case of emergency.

Extra Candles

Add more candles to your portrait scene than you think you may need to ensure you have enough light to adequately illuminate the subject. Make sure you don't position the candle in such a way that harsh shadows are created either on or behind the subject. Eliminate some of these harsh shadows on the subject by placing one or two candles on the shadowed side of the face. You can help remove shadows behind the subject by placing a candle behind him to light the background.

Ambient Lighting

Don't be afraid to use ambient lighting to create a candle-lit portrait. Using ambient lighting does require some experimentation and trial and error. Always use defused lighting with a yellow or warm tone. Christmas tree lights and artificial candles can be used to create a diffused light in a candle-lit portrait. You can use white lights and diffuse them by housing them in an amber container or use amber-colored bulbs.

Flash

You may find that candlelight alone is not producing enough light. In this case, though it is typical for the camera's flash to be turned off while taking candle-lit portraits, consider experimenting by using a flash in conjunction with colored gel or a lens cover. Use yellow or orange gel or a flash lens cover to create the same warm effect that is achieved with candlelight. A flash can help eliminate shadows on a subject's face or provide a warm glow to illuminate the background.

Other

There are other ways to maximize the light provided by candles for a candle-lit portrait. Put a white tablecloth or other piece of white fabric beneath the candles. This will help to reflect the light given by each candle and give a warm light to the subject's face. You can also put the candles on a mirror, which will double the light given off by each candle as the light is reflected by the mirror. Place mirrors above or under the subject's face to pick up the candlelight and help illuminate the subject's face.
