While a beautiful sunset can make for a compelling photograph, you may also find that the sun's bright light obscures any other subjects that may have been in the frame. When used purposefully, this technique is known as backlighting. When used accidentally, it can ruin a photo of a friend or family member. You can salvage some backlit photos with a little bit of digital editing.

Instructions

    1

Install a digital photo editor with "Dodge" and "Burn" capabilities. You will find this functionality in Adobe's Photoshop as well as free solutions like Paint.net and GIMP.

    2

Load the photograph into the work area of your software. This is usually done by clicking "File" and then "Open."

    3

Select the "Dodge" tool. Dodging a photograph is an old darkroom technique that lessens the exposure of a print in certain areas. Dodge the areas of your photo that need to be lighter, such as your subject's face.

    4

Select the "Burn" tool. Burning is the opposite of dodging, in that burned areas of a photograph will experience more intense exposure. Burn the bright areas of the photo to draw more attention to the now lighter subject.

    5

Save the photograph once the desired results have been reached.
