How to Create Sepia

Few people think of marine life and photography at the same time, but that is just what you do when discussing sepia tone images. Cuttlefish, a type of mollusk related to octopus, are sometimes called sepia, though the term is more frequently used in reference to the red-brown ink they produce. While you won't find cuttlefish in a dark room, the term sepia has been used to refer to photos that develop a red-brown tone during processing. This coloration is due to the chemicals used during processing, not age or abuse. Modern digital photographers can easily alter images to mimic the effect.

Instructions

Windows Live Photo Gallery

    1

Click "Start" and select "Windows Live Photo Gallery" from the menu. Search using the keyword "Gallery" if the program does not appear on the list.

    2

Locate the photo you wish to edit. Navigate by clicking the folders in the left menu.

    3

    Double-click the photo.

    4

Click "Sepia Tone" in the effects menu at the top of the screen. Hover over "Sepia" to preview the color option.

Gimp

    5

Right-click the file and select "Open With Gimp."

    6

Select "Colorify" from the "Colors" menu. Access the colors menu by right-clicking or from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

    7

Click the cube next to custom color.

    8

Select the color brown you wish to use; option may be chose manually via HTML notation or visually using a color wheel.

    9

Press "OK" in both the "Custom Color" and "Colorify" dialogue windows.

Adobe Photoshop

    10

Right-click the image file and select "Open with Photoshop."

    11

Click "Desaturate" in the "Image" menu under "Adjustments."

    12

Press "Layer," "New Adjustment Layer," then "Photo Filter" to access the pre-installed color filters.

    13

Change the filter to "Sepia." Check the box next to "Preserve Luminosity." Adjust the "Density" percentage to change the level of brightness and contrast in the image; the higher the density the darker the image will appear.

    14

Confirm your options by pressing "OK." Save the image.

Camera

    15

    Turn on your camera.

    16

Press "Menu" and select "Color Effect."
