How to Backlight Pictures

Backlighting is the procedure of positioning light behind your subject when taking a picture. Done properly, it can create a glow behind the subject. Done improperly, it leaves the subject eclipsed by the light. Generally, backlighting is considered ideal for shooting nature. When used on people, it is intended to make the photo more dramatic and artistic. Even for advanced photographers, mastering this technique takes repeated trial and error. Regardless of your skill level, there are certain basic methods that should be applied to create attractive backlighted photos.

Instructions

    1

Position your subject in front of the light source. This source could be an electric light or even the sun.

    2

Place a "fill light" in front of your subject. Having a lesser source of light in front will prevent your subject from falling into too dark of a shadow and becoming unseeable.

    3

Use a lens hood on your camera. This technique can reduce glare.

    4

Adjust your camera's aperture settings to the shorter side to cut down on light; this can help prevent the likelihood of your film being overexposed.
