When you have the right photography equipment and understand how to use them, you can create a wide range of visual effects and styles in your photos. Most people dislike when their photos come out looking blurry, but in some cases it actually adds to the image and setting. A photo of a cheetah running through the grass or a race car driving down a track may look ideal in a photo with a blurred background because the blurriness signifies movement and speed. Your camera settings will depend on the type of camera you are using, but the overall idea for producing a blurry background requires you to set your camera so that the subject is in focus and the background is out of focus.
Instructions
- 1
Study the settings of your camera. Familiarize yourself with what each setting does and consult your user's manual if needed.
2Determine where you can change the camera settings on your camera, which should include the automatic setting, manual setting and aperture priority. In some cases, this may be found easily by looking for a button setting on top of the camera or within the menu settings.
3Look for what is called the aperture or f-stop setting, and set this so it is set at the smallest number possible. If you can change this setting while remaining aperture priority, no further adjustments are needed. However, if you have your camera set to manual, you need to adjust the shutter speed to a high number.
4Adjust the manual shutter speed setting if necessary to a setting of at least 100. Test the setting by taking a photo and judging the light in the photo. If it is too light, you need to set the manual setting to 250 or higher. If the photo comes out very dark, try decreasing the manual setting to 60.
5Position the person or object that you want to take a photo of about 8 to 10 feet from a wall or something else that will represent the background. Try to include shapes and patterns in your background because this will enhance the blurred effect.
6Stand relatively close to the object your person you want to have in focus and adjust your camera so that that person or object is in focus.
7Take the photo and evaluate the resulting photo. Make any additional adjustments where necessary to increase or decrease the blurriness.
