How to Photograph a Ballet Performance

Before you can master the techniques that allow you to have clear images full of movement, you must practice the art of ballet photography. By attending as many ballet performances as possible, you will be able to develop your own style and add a creative touch that is truly yours. The dancers and the ballet school will likely thank you for helping them to capture and remember outstanding performances.

Instructions

    1

Prepare your equipment ahead of time. Bring two cameras, if possible. Use one for portraits and the other for action shots. Set up each camera with the appropriate ISO settings and shutter speed for the venue. Switching between cameras is faster than changing the settings of a single camera. Bring additional memory cards and batteries. Estimate about 500 frames per hour for single shots and as much as 2000 frames for burst shots.

    2

Test shots before the start of the performance. Practice at the venue either a few hours before the event or during dress rehearsal. Try out all possible perspectives.

    3

Avoid using a flash, in accordance with the theater's and dance company's request. This will cut your wait time significantly, allowing you to take more pictures. Using a flash annoys the audience and can be dangerous for the dancer whose sight and step can be compromised during a few important seconds. If the theater makes an exception for you to use a flash on a single occasion, limit the use of your flash to the ending pose once the choreography is completed, and while the dancers are bowing to the audience.

    4

Use single shots at the beginning and at the end of a performance when the dancer is holding a single pose. Use burst shots for the rest of the performance. Because movements are performed in fractions of a second, the burst mode will allow you to take several pictures by holding down the button for a longer period of time, thereby increasing your chances of getting the right shot.

    5

Wait during jumps and snap poses in between moves. This will allow you to increase the number of clear pictures you will have, as jumping pictures often look cloudy. Use a camera with a fast shutter speed, if you want to take clear pictures of ballet dancers as they are jumping.

    6

Take most of your pictures in a wide shot that shows the whole dancer or as much of the body as possible. Because of the constant movement, it is harder to take closely zoomed-in pictures. Crop pictures later on to achieve the best results.

How to Do Water Droplet Photography

Water flows, splashes and surges. To the naked eye, the movement of water is continuous and fluid, but the action-freezing capability of photography allows us to capture the elusive motion of water. The crests and ridges in water droplet photographs are deeply detailed, more resembling intricate glass sculptures than the splashes of water that they are. Water droplet photography can be done using several common household items.

Instructions

    1

Pick a dish to use as the water droplet stage. Dishes of different shapes and colors will affect the hue, reflections and patterns in the final image experiment with several dishes to find the look you like.

    2

Fill the dish with water and set it on a stable surface.

    3

Set your camera on the tripod, point the camera at the water dish and tighten any securing tabs or screws to lock the camera in place.

    4

Set the camera to manual mode.

    5

Press the cameras shutter button down halfway to auto-focus on the spot where the water droplets will fall. After the camera has focused, switch to manual focus mode.

    6

Set the cameras shutter speed to 1/200th of a second or faster.

    7

Set the cameras aperture to f/2.8 or smaller. Smaller apertures will increase the depth of field, but will require more light for a correctly exposed image.

    8

Connect the remote shutter release to your camera, if you are using one. If you dont have a remote shutter release, put your finger on the shutter button.

    9

Squeeze a drop of water into the dish. Squeezing from a higher spot will result in a bigger splash.

    10

Press the shutter release or shutter button as the droplet impacts the surface of the water.

How to Add Copyright Symbols on Top of Photos

Copyright protection begins the moment you create a work of art, but placing your copyright notice on a photograph provides further protection against unauthorized use, according to attorney Carolyn E. Wright, who specializes in photographers' rights. (www.photoattorney.com) You must follow the correct format for copyright, though, for the notice to be in effect. This can be done with any photo-editing software, although the most commonly used is Adobe Photoshop.

Instructions

    1

Open up your photograph in your photo-editing software. While there are different types of editing software and different variations for completing this task in each, the steps below are universal for most software programs.

    2

Click on the tool to add text to the image, which will create a layer on top of the image for typing. In Photoshop, this is the icon marked as a capital "T."

    3

Type either the full word "Copyright" or the symbol for copyright. To create the copyright symbol, type either CTRL+ALT, then press "C" for the PC, or

    Option+G for the MAC.

    4

Add the year the work was created, and your name.

    5

Move the notice to whatever part of the photo you choose. In Photoshop, the tool for moving the text is the arrow icon at the top of your tool bar. Some people place it in the center to prevent others from cropping it off the photograph, while some prefer a corner placement that is less obtrusive.

    6

Save the image with the new copyright notice as a .jpg file.

Framing a Piece of Art Work

When you create or purchase a piece of artwork, you're doing it to show the artistic appreciation you have. The best way to do so is by framing and displaying it for everyone in your home to see. Framing adds to the appeal of the art and protects it from dirt, dust and damage. While a professional can frame the piece for you, you'll save money and learn a valuable skill if you take the time to frame it yourself.

Instructions

    1

Measure the dimensions of the artwork. For an example, use a piece measuring 8 inches tall by 11 inches wide.

    2

Select a frame that adds to the aesthetic appeal of the artwork, not your home. The artwork should stand out to viewers, and framing it in something that adds to its appearance allows you to move it from one room to another if necessary and eliminates the need to reframe it at a later time to match the new decor. The frame needs to include excess space around the piece to include space for the matting. For example, assume the matting is going to extend an additional inch to each side of the piece, making the new dimensions 10 inches tall by 13 inches wide and requiring a frame of the same size.

    3

Select glass for the frame. Get a glossy shine if you want to bring out a specific element of the work, or a non-reflective glass if you want to keep the piece mild and allow it to blend into its surroundings. Select glass the same size as the frame.

    4

Cut a piece of matting with a craft knife to the same dimensions as the frame. Make markings an inch from the edge of the matting on all four sides, creating an inner square with the margins you chose, 1 inch, for example on all four sides. Use the craft knife to cut the inside of the matting out to display your art.

    5

Add the glass to the frame.

    6

Place the matting down on top of the glass, then add the artwork. Be careful placing the art down, ensuring it's not crooked in the frame and the matting surrounds the piece evenly.

    7

Place the backing on the frame to finish the framing process.

    8

Add a piece of picture hanging wire to the back of the frame between two eye hooks placed approximately a third of the way down the frame.
