How to Compress Photo Size

If you are sending a photo via email or uploading a photo to your website, you'll want to compress the image by resizing or resampling it so it can be downloaded faster. Resizing an image means changing the size of the image while resampling refers to changing the number of pixels in the image. While they are two different processes, they can both help achieve the same effect: lowering the disk space taken up by an image. To accomplish this, you'll need an image-editing program capable of either effect.

Instructions

    1

Open the photo in your image-editing program.

    2

Click the "Image" or "Edit" menu at the top of the image editor program window and choose "Resize" or "Resample". A window should appear where you can change the settings for the effect you've chosen.

    3

Set the dimensions of the image smaller than the current dimensions, which will create a lower resolution image. If you've chosen to resample the image, adjust the PPI (pixels per inch) to a lower number. You may also have the option to change exactly how the program resizes or resamples the image. Experiment with the settings to create a good balance between compression and image quality.

    4

Click the "File" menu and choose "Save As." This will save a new version of the resized/resampled photo, preserving the original image in the original dimensions and format. Type in a new name and choose a save directory. Choose a file format and click the "Save" button

How to Select Lenses for Creative Photography

In creative photography a photographer can use different camera lenses to create desired effects or to simplify the shooting procedure. Camera lenses establish focal length, angle and depth of field. Normal lenses, wide-angle lenses, telephoto and zoom lenses are examples of different effects that a photographer can create with adept uses of lenses.

Instructions

    1

Approach your subject with a normal lens. When the focal length of a lens is approximately the same as the diagonal of the film, the lens is considered to be normal. A normal lens, 50mm, best approximates the view of the human eye in range and size of objects. This is the lens of the purist.

    2

Select a wide-angle lens if you want to include more of your subject in a frame. A wide-angle lens allows the photographer to be close to her subject and include more space as if she were more distant to the subject. Perspective is an issue. Size becomes distorted and distance alters. These considerations can be creatively applied and resolved with interesting effects. A wide-angle lens offers greatly enhanced depth-of-field. The photographer need not refocus as often as with a normal lens.

    3

Use a telephoto or long lens to photograph distant objects and bring them into close examination. Telephoto lenses have extremely limited depth-of-field. A long lens works well with certain subjects such as wildlife, which are best photographed from a distance. Surroundings will blur, but that can be used to creative effect. A blur of dense brush framing a baboon has creative potential for the frame. The subject is the undisputed focal point of the shot. Generally, for 35mm cameras, 85mm to 105mm long lenses are the most useful and practical. Some longer lenses are extremely heavy.

    4

Consider the attributes of a zoom lens, which is several lenses in one. A zoom lens has variable focal length. This means that you can adjust for close-up, wide-angle as well as distant, telephoto shots. Some zoom lenses include a macro feature. Convenience in a shifting environment is an attractive feature of the zoom lens. Some experts think that it is best to use a zoom lens that ranges from 43mm to 86mm. Lenses of greater range create a loss off sharpness.

If you have recently built a bar in your basement or are having a night on the town at the local pub, you may want to document this by taking some photographs. Unfortunately, many bars are darkly lit. While almost all cameras have a flash unit, inconsistent lighting may cause the colors or lighting in your bar photo to be off. However, with the help of freely available photo editing software such as Picasa, GIMP or Paint.NET, touching up a dark bar photo is a snap.

Instructions

Picasa

    1

Open your bar photo in Picasa. Double-click on the Picasa logo to open the program. From the File menu, select "Import From." On the menu bar next to the heading "Import from:," select "Folder," then highlight your bar photo. While your bar photo is highlighted, select "View and Edit" from the "Picture" menu.

    2

Select the "Auto Color" setting for your bar photo. Your bar photo will be displayed in the main window. From the left window, select "Auto Color." This setting will automatically adjust the colors in your bar photo to approximate the normal color spectrum.

    3

Edit the "Fill Light" setting for your bar photo. If the lighting on your bar photo still appears too dark after using Auto Color, you may need to adjust the light settings as well. From the window on the left, slide the "Fill Light" bar to the right. Your bar photo will lighten up. Adjust the "Fill Light" setting until the lighting on your bar photo appears to be normal.

GIMP

    4

Open your bar photo in GIMP. From the File menu, select "Open." Navigate to the folder containing your bar photo and click on it, then click on the "Open" button.

    5

Create a new layer. On the Layers dialog box, right-click the background layer, then select "Duplicate." This will create a copy of your bar photo, which you can edit without making permanent changes to the photo. Left-click on the eyeball next to the "Background" layer, then left-click on the "Duplicate" layer. This will display only the editable copy of your bar photo.

    6

Correct the color in your bar photo. From the Tools menu, select "Color," then "Levels." On the dialogue box, select the "Auto Correction" button, then select "Okay." The brightness and coloring in your bar photo will be fixed.

Paint.NET

    7

Open your photo in Paint.NET. From the File menu, select "Open." Navigate to the folder containing your bar photo and click on it, then select "Open." After opening your bar photo, make a copy by selecting "File" then "Save a Copy."

    8

Create a new layer. On your keyboard, press "Control," "Shift" and "D" at the same time.

    9

Edit the layer properties to lighten the photo. Press the "F4" key to open the layer properties dialogue box, then press "Tab" twice. On the dialogue box, select "Screen," then select "Okay." The brightness and coloring in your bar photo will be corrected.
