How to Photograph with a Monopod

A tripod reduces camera shake when shooting in low light or when taking portrait shots with a slow shutter. However, it's not always feasible to haul a large tripod around. That's where a monopod comes in, with a single lightweight retractable rod, adjustable height and small size, carrying one on remote shoots is easy. Read on to learn how to photograph with a monopod.

Instructions

    1

Choose a monopod with stability and versatility in mind. Look for numerous locking collars along the length of the rod, allowing you to adjust the height precisely. In addition, pick a monopod with a three-legged foot that retracts inside the bottom the rod but provides additional stability when needed.

    2

Attach the monopod to the bottom of your camera. All Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras are equipped with a screw attachment and many point-and-shoot cameras have them as well.

    3

Adjust the desired height of the monopod by releasing the locking collars and extending the rod. Once you determine the length needed, re-lock the collars to keep the rod from slipping. If your monopod is equipped with a three-legged-foot, you can extend it now.

    4

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and hold one hand on your camera and the other on the upper part of the monopod for stability.

    5

Compose your shot, inhale, hold your breath, and then take the picture. Because you are an integral part of the stability of the monopod, holding your breath will reduce movement caused by breathing. Squeeze the shutter button slowly and smoothly.

How to Make a Light Box for Small Objects

A light box is a photography studio in miniature. It's an enclosure designed to give the photographer total control over the light and shadows cast on a small object. It's especially useful for preventing reflections from appearing on shiny surfaces of things like musical instruments. Professional light boxes can cost $75 to $150 or more, but the photographer on a tight budget can get similar results for a fraction of the cost.

Instructions

Construction

    1

Choose a cardboard box big enough to hold and display your subjects. The open top of the box will become the window for the camera to peer into, while the remaining sides will become lighting windows.

    2

Cut windows into the box. Turn each remaining side of the box into an open window by cutting out the side. You'll want as much open space as you can manage; leave about an inch of cardboard available as a support frame.

    3

Add the paper. Sheets of white tissue paper from a nearby gift store are perfect for this step. Cut them to the same size as the sides of the box, and tape them down over the open windows. The paper will soften the light cast across the subject, so there won't be crisp black shadows cast. As an added bonus, they will isolate the subject from the rest of the room, so there won't be any distracting reflections.

    4

Add the backdrop. The last piece of the construction is one sheet of poster board. This is used as a backdrop, to hide the cardboard and tape of the inside of the box from the camera. Place it inside the box, beneath and behind the subject, curving up to the top of the box.

    5

Prepare the light box for use. Set the box on one side so the flaps are vertical. Place the subject inside, and set up the lights outside. Place the camera on a tripod just outside the box, and pull the flaps close around the lens.

How to Use Mike's Thumbnailer Software for Mac

Just when I think I have found the best thumbnail generator, I come across another software product that does it better. Mike's Thumbnailer is a utility that you can download for FREE. You can specify the size of your thumbnail, preview the thumbnail and the image, sort the thumbnails and even create a directory of thumbs for an HTML project. The thing I like about it is that you can preview and sort your images at full size and create thumbnails at any size you specify. You can even rotate the images, view them at full size and create a slideshow. Read on to learn the basics of using this handy software.

Instructions

    1
    Open Files

Download Mike's Thumbnailer 2.5 (see link in Resources below). Once you have downloaded and installed the software, click on the icon to open the program. This will display the Thumbnailer control panel. Select the folder containing your images by first clicking the HOME button and then browsing through your directories.

    2
    Add to Favorites

Add folders to the favorites by clicking on the folder and selecting the ADD TO FAVORITES at the bottom. You can add as many folders as you want by using this process. You will see the images appear in the left pane and you can scroll through the images and either KEEP the image or TRASH it.

    3
    Preferences

The preferences tab allows you to sort and resort the thumbnails. This is also where you set the desired size of your thumbnail. The default is 50%, which is kind of large for a thumbnail. Experiment with 20% or 30% depending on what you need for your website or slideshow.

    4
    Viewer Window

Click the viewer tab. Notice that the image is viewed at full size. To see the size of the thumbnail just click on the image pane and a preview window will appear with the thumbnail image. Notice the two different sized thumbnails and experiment with the preferences until you have the size you want. Notice that you have the options to keep and trash images with this window as well.

    5

Once you are all done, click on the CONTACT SHEET tab. Select the number of columns you want for your web page and click CREATE at the bottom-right corner. This will create a folder with all the thumbnail images and a HTML index file for the images that you can use with your web page.

    6
    Slideshow Feature

You can also use this application to create image slideshows with music. Simply click on the SLIDESHOW tab and keep or trash files from the list to create the images. Select some music from your hard drive and set your timing and your show is ready to run. This little application has a lot of features and is the quickest way to create thumbnails of various sizes.
