Ideas for Combining an Old & New Photo

Combining photos is an art form requiring an artistic eye and fluency with photo editing software. Whether you want to combine an old photo and a new photo for a software skills class, an art photography project or just a personal artistic challenge, choose what photos to combine based upon the mood you wish to evoke, such as nostalgia, bafflement, surprise or amusement.

Modern River, Old-Fashioned Ship

Most major cities grew up on or near a waterway.
Most major cities grew up on or near a waterway.

Start with an image of a river flowing through a densely urban landscape, such as the Hudson River in New York City or the Minnesota River and the Mississippi flowing through Minneapolis. Pick a shot where you can see urban development on both sides of the river -- the more modern-looking, the better. Go for dramatic skyscrapers and gleaming office towers. Then add an old, black-and-white photo depicting a ship not in common use anymore, such as the ships Sir Ernest Shackleton took to Antarctica. Superimpose the old ship on the urbanized river for an eerily anachronistic photo.

A Place in Time

City streets are good subjects for illustrating the changes of modernization.
City streets are good subjects for illustrating the changes of modernization.

Layer an old photo of a certain place, such as a park, a building or an intersection, on top of a modern photo of the place. Take the new photo yourself if necessary. Try to align a distinctive landmark like a statue or a certain mountain in both photos so that you can erase sections of the top photo, allowing the photo beneath to bleed through. This is a particularly compelling way to combine old and new photos if you use photos that show a place before and after industrialization.

Posed Portrait and Nightclub

Such a combination will be most effective if the figures in the old and new photos are roughly the same size.

Juxtapose a formal posed portrait from the late 19th or early 20th century with a blurred neon-streaked photo taken in a contemporary nightclub. For example, you could position the person from long ago -- complete with the chair she was sitting on -- on the floor of a dance club, amidst sweat-streaked dancers. Or go the other route and transplant, say, a break-dancer in an urban club into a sepia Victorian-era sitting room. For an extra-creepy combination, incorporate a Victorian funeral photo into a nightclub scene. During the Victorian era, photo portraits were often taken of people after their deaths as a memento for the family. Sometimes living family members would pose with the body. For example, a young girl would pose cradling her deceased infant brother. While unusual to some modern eyes, these portraits were sometimes the only photos by which family members could remember their loved ones.

Young Person, Old Person

Create a haunting homage to the passage of time by combining an old photo of a very young child with a contemporary photo of an old person. A particularly compelling photo combination would show an old woman posing as if holding an infant -- with her childhood baby photo inserted into the empty space.

Selling photographs on the Internet expands the photographer's sales arena to reach customers around the globe. In the Sept. 2, 2008, issue of "Forbes," Taylor Buley states that selling photographs online "is an increasingly lush business." Various types of photo marketplaces are available online. The top three ways to sell photos on the Web are: specific artist sites that offer space for a percentage of the sale price, stock photo agencies (each with different requirements) that pay royalties to photographers for usage, and photographer's websites where the photographer sells directly to the client.

Instructions

    1

Create a sample portfolio for the Internet. Stock agencies require samples of photography in various categories. They want to see a cross-section of the photographer's work, skill and style. Art gallery sites will not ask for a review of work, but the photographer will need the samples to put on the site under their logo. The same goes for the photographer selling photos on their own website.

    2

Size the images to the specifications required by the stock agency or image marketplace.

    3

Organize image files into categories. Once the photographer is selling his work on the Internet, images will be found through keyword searches. It pays to give some thought to framing categories. Once they are set up, they are hard to change. This is the framework for an image database. Having an organized image database will help the photographer track images and usage.

    4

Apply for an Employee Identification Number (EIN). This step is for United States residents. The photographer will need either an EIN number or a social security number for tax-reporting purposes.

    5

Set up an account to receive payment and royalties for the photos. Paypal is widely accepted and easy to set up. Other electronic payment services are available, including services for international payments. Generally, stock sites prefer to pay photographers electronically. Most will offer the option of payment by check, but payments are slower and the minimum the photographer has to make in royalties is usually higher before the site will make a payout.

    6

Fill out the registration information for the image-resell site. Make sure to specify payment preferences and tax ID information.

    7

Upload the required number of sample images (choose images from your sample portfolio) for review. The average time period for review is seven to ten days. Once the photographer is approved by the stock agency, images can be uploaded at any time. For image marketplaces that do not require reviews of work, images can be uploaded immediately.

When you are photographing a child, getting him to smile can be difficult, especially when he is cranky and would much rather be doing something else. A professional portrait can be a lasting reminder of the child's tender years; a big smile on the child's face can make all the difference between a good portrait and a great one.

Instructions

    1

Tell the kid to think of something or someone who makes him happy, such as a favorite pastime or a favorite relative. If the child is focused on something that makes him happy while you are taking multiple pictures, he is more likely to be smiling when they are taken.

    2

Tell a funny story or a joke while the photo is being taken. Deliver the punchline of the joke just as you are about to snap a picture so that the kid's smile will be at its biggest.

    3

Make funny faces or do a wacky dance to make the child smile. Have someone, possibly the child's parent, stand behind you and act silly while you are taking the pictures. If the parent of the child has brought along a favorite toy, let the child hold it during the portrait.

    4

Bribe the child, offering to give him a sweet treat if he is on his best behavior while getting the portrait made. If you are the parent, offer to take your child to see a movie. If the kid has something fun to look forward to, he is much more likely to be compliant and smile sweetly while having the photos taken.
