Neat Ideas for Photography Backdrops

Ideas for photography backdrops come from our own life experiences, creativity and imagination. Scenes can be created or naturally and architecturally reinvented. A photographer's goal is to capture the subject in its best form, whether it be human, animal or inanimate. This is done by creating the proper background that complements the subject.

Constructive Thinking

Neat backdrops for photography can be found all around our communities and in nature. Sides of old buildings, brick walls, graffiti and unique structural attributes provide a photographer with color, contrast, texture and emotional direction in a photo session. Historical architecture, such as found in theaters or old jails, sometimes provides unique points of interest when used as a background for pictures. Environmental elements such as forests, gardens and waterfalls are natural canvases. Always acquire permission from the owner or caretaker before entering private property.

Projecting Scenes

Projecting slides onto a neutral colored wall or screen will break the bounds of time and space in a photography session. Whether in a home or professional studio, a photographer can place the subject anywhere in the world or in a particular place of history. Selections could include the Parthenon, a rain forest, an Egyptian pyramid, Mt. Kilimanjaro, or a lavender field in Provence, France. Projections of deceased family members photographed with living members could create a portrait of generations that didn't have opportunity to meet. Aquariums provide for a fun slant on a picture, especially if a child plays dress-up and is photographed as a mermaid, seamonkey or scuba diver.

Homemade Tapestries

Tapestry cloths that hang behind the subject being photographed can be created using different artistic media. Murals, collages and banners may be painted onto an old sheet or canvas cloth, or the fabric may be dyed. Sponge painting techniques can create a textured background. Depending on colors used, such backdrops can be bright and cheerful, gloomy or lend a sophisticated muted tone to the project. Trompe l'oeil illusions, a faux painting technique, spatially create depth. Scenery is fashioned by shadows and highlights to fool the viewer into seeing three-dimensional space such as would be expected of a holiday fireplace, a pumpkin patch or bookshelves. Paper mache confetti may be applied to backdrops by adhering colored paper onto a solid background. Attaching artificial flowers could create a rain shower of blossoms to photograph against.

Combining Elements

Experiment with combinations of elements, colors and textures to create the intended illusion. Highlights and shadows add contrasting elements. Sometimes a blue background with an upright surfboard is all that's needed. Layering backdrops, props and subject will add to the scenic invention and provide three-dimensional imagery. Creativity can be simple or complex.
