How to Restore Photos That Lost Camera Properties

Digital camera's store all types of information about an image. This information includes the lens used, the aperture, and the ISO speed when the photo was taken. When a digital image is imported to the computer, it is possible to lose camera properties assigned to digital images if the file transfer is not completed correctly. Information lost during an improper import can be recovered; the complexity of the process will vary depending on the goals of the user.

Instructions

Recovering a Lost File Extension

    1

Determine what data needs to be recovered about the photo. Is the issue simply that the image will not open on the computer as the file extension type has been lost? To recover only the file extension, proceed with the steps below. To recover the full image file, proceed to Section 2.

    2

Identify the files that are not opening correctly.

    3

Right-click on the file name if you are using a PC. Click on "Re-name." Change the file name to include ".jpeg" at the end of the file name. This process will need to be completed for each file individually. For example a file named "house" will now be labeled "house.jpeg."

    4

Control-click on the file name if you are using a Mac. Change the file name to include ."jpeg" at the end of the file name. Do this for each photo file individually.

    5

Double-click on the file after re-naming it. The image will now source correctly and open as an image file.

Recovering Full Image Data

    6

Determine if the memory card utilized to attain the photo's has been used since the initial import. If the images were deleted from the memory card, images can be recovered as long as the card has not been used since.

If the card has not been used since the images were imported, proceed to Step 2. If the memory card has been used since the images were imported, proceed to Section 3.

    7

Determine if the images have been deleted from the memory card. If they have proceed to Step 3.

Import the image data to the computer if the images have not been deleted from the memory card. Create a new file with the new photos and delete the corrupt files at this time, to avoid confusion of the files in the future. Select the images on the memory card, create a file within the C directory of your computer and copy and paste the images to the new location on your computer.

    8

Download digital image recovery software if the memory card has been erased or used again, so you cannot easily import the photos to the computer another time. There are many digital image recovery software programs available online that can be obtained for free or for a fee. Be sure to choose a version compatible with your computer. A Window's based recovery system will not operate properly on a Mac computer.

    9

Open the image recovery software. Follow the on-screen directions. Be sure to direct the recovery software to the media card drive attached to the computer, and not the hard disk of the computer itself.

    10

Bring the file data back to the computer when you have recovered the lost files. Most programs recommend that you create a new file when you import the lost files. Do not try to write over the existing, corrupted images, but instead create a new file directory and import the image data there. Upon successfully importing the recovered image files, delete the corrupted images.
