How to Make a Photo Vignette

Vignetting a photo involves making the edges of the photo appear darker than the rest, simulating the look of an old photo or silent movie. This can be done in the camera using filters or by modifying the lens; however, doing it this way means the original image will always have the vignetting, which you may not want. The effect can also be created using Photoshop, leaving the original image untouched. This can be done two ways: using a gradient (color progression) and using the "lens correction" distortion filter. The second is only available on newer editions of Photoshop.

Instructions

Vignetting Using a Gradient

    1

Open the image in Photoshop. Press "D" on the keyboard to make the default color black.

    2

Click "Layer" on the task bar, then "New Fill Layer" and select "Gradient." Click "OK" in the dialogue box that appears.

    3

Select "Radial" from the drop-down menu in the "Gradient Fill" box, then select the "Reverse" check box.

    4

Click the "Gradient" bar to open the "Gradient Editor." Slide the white tab, also known as opacity stop, to the left towards the black tab. This will shrink the gradient, limiting it to the edge of the image. Adjust the tabs until you get the desired effect, then click "OK." Click "OK" in the "Gradient Fill" box to complete the effect.

Using Lens Correction

    5

Open the image in Photoshop. Click "Filter" on the task bar, then "Distort" and select "Lens Correction." This opens up the Lens Correction editor.

    6

Uncheck the "Show Grid" box at the bottom of the editor.

    7

Locate the sliders on the right side of the editor under the "Vignette" section, labeled "Amount" and "Midpoint." Slide the "Amount" bar towards the left to create the vignetting effect. The farther to the left you slide the bar, the darker the edges will be. Slide the "Midpoint" bar in either direction to cover more or less of the image with the vignetting.
