A stereographic map projection is the depiction of a three-dimensional sphere in a two-dimensional plane. A photograph can be manipulated with image editing software to have the appearance of a sphere. Such a photo is known as a stereographic projection, or as a planet or globe effect photograph. A planet photo is best created from a panoramic image with an aspect ratio of at least 2:1 (twice as wide as it is tall). A lens that has a large field of view, such as a fisheye, allows the scene to be captured in fewer photographs, which makes it easier to stitch the panorama together. A stereographic projection can be made from a conventional photo with a standard lens.

Select a photograph. Landscape photos make good stereographic projections. The top 45 to 55 percent of the photo should be a uniform-looking sky; the bottom 45 to 55 percent should be terrain or water that has a solid pattern or color. The left and right edges of the photo should be similar in appearance.
2Crop the photograph to achieve a perfectly horizontal horizon, because the left and right edges of the projection must join at the same height. Select a narrow rectangular area, the width of the photo, with the crop tool. With the cursor just outside the border of the selected area, click the mouse button; this allows you to rotate the cropped area. Move the top border of your selection to the horizon and rotate it until the border and the horizon line up. Re-adjust the top and bottom of the crop area to achieve the proper proportions of sky and land or water. Double-click the image to crop the picture.
3Make the photograph square. Select "Image" from the top menu, then select "Image Size." Deselect the "Constrain Proportions" box. In the Pixel Dimensions box, adjust the "height" value to be the same as the "width" value. Press "Enter" or click "OK."

Rotate the image 180 degrees. Select "Image," then "Rotate Canvas." Select "180." The top of the photo will become the inside of the sphere, the bottom of the photo will become the outside.
5Wrap your image into a sphere with the "Filter" tool from the top menu. Select "Distort," then "Polar Coordinates." Select the "Rectangular to Polar" button. Click "OK."
6Use the clone stamp and spot-healing brush tools to blend the image if there is a distinguishable line where the edges of the photo meet.
7Crop and rotate the resulting image, then adjust the contrast and colors to obtain a result you like.
