Skills Needed to Be a Black & White Photographer

The advent of high-quality, reasonably priced digital cameras has allowed many would-be photographers to own equipment similar to that used by professionals. At the same time, an explosion of Internet resources and the improvement and increased availability of photo-editing software has allowed people to learn the craft of photography without years of expensive training. There's never been a better time for those interested in pursuing black and white photography, either as a hobby or as a profession.

Types

While no such career as "black and white photographer" exists, many photographers choose to work primarily or entirely in black and white, either by converting color digital files or by using black and white film. Such photographers select one or more areas of focus appropriate for black and white images, like landscapes, infrared photography, artistic nudes and emotional captures, such as at weddings. While salary varies by genre, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests the mean salary for photographers is approximately $36,000 per year, as of May 2009.

The Facts

The skills required to become a black and white photographer essentially match those required to become a color photographer. Learning to shoot in black and white specifically, however, allows the student to focus on basic conceptual issues such as composition and exposure, without distractions posed by white balance, color casts and other problems frequently introduced by color photographs. Schools such as the New York Institute of Photography place great emphasis on learning black and white photography.

Principles

While black and white photography may appear less complex than color photography, the simpler requirements highlight the importance of the relevant elements. For example, lighting is paramount in black and white, with shadows frequently becoming a major aspect of a photograph. Without vibrant colors to engage the viewer, the photographer must learn to utilize strong composition and emotional or interesting subject matter. And, of course, mastery of basic photographic principles such as lighting and exposure will prove essential.

Specific Skills

Because black and white photography is often -- but not always -- moodier or more emotional than color photography, those pursuing it as an art form or using it in a photography business must understand and take advantage of the benefits and capabilities of black and white. For those shooting artistic nudes, this may mean learning to utilize shadows and dramatic lighting to establish a particular feel. For landscapes, a photographer may have to master additional software to properly convert color files to the black and white tones desired.
