Choosing the right background for your photo is an important part of the artistic process. A good backdrop can enhance an image and even add meaning that may not have been there without it. Both professional and hobbyist photographers can benefit from having an arsenal of background ideas to employ on the fly.
Fabric
Blankets, sheets and swaths of cut fabric are inexpensive and easy options for homemade photo backdrops. The fabric can be hung up with clothespins or draped along curtain rods. Allowing the fabric to drape naturally instead of pinning it taut can add a bit of visual interest to the photo. Make sure the fabric you use isn't too bright or overly patterned or it will draw focus from your subject.
Painted Wood
Old pieces of wood or fresh cuts of plywood can become interesting photo backdrops when painted. Use a natural sponge to create a mottled look, or paint with one solid color for a cleaner background. If you want something really interesting, splash paint of different colors across the wood.
Paper or Plastic Sheet
For photographing small objects or animals, a neutral background can be created by using a large piece of construction paper or a sheet of thin polypropylene. Polypropylene provides a clean matte finish and will not wrinkle or damage easily. Paper is less expensive and more readily available, but it can become dirty over time. Both paper and polypropylene sheeting can be found in craft stores, and are produced in a wide variety of colors. To hang the sheet, secure it to the edge of a table or chair with duct tape and curve it down to the floor below so that approximately 1/3 of it is resting flat on the ground. Tape the end of the paper to the floor.
Natural Elements
Have your subjects lay on the grass and shoot them from above; this will provide a fresh, green background for your photo. Posing your subjects in front of a bed of flowers or by a grove of trees can also provide an interesting natural backdrop. Create the illusion of outdoor shooting in your home or studio by employing props like fake grass, a sandbox, kiddie pool full of water, cut flowers or some potted trees.
