Personal photographs help friends and family to remember important times in their lives. Whether the photos are from vacations, gatherings, birthday parties, holidays, or any other event, each picture marks a moment that will probably never occur again. The way in which you take personal photographs is entirely up to your style and aesthetic tastes, but a few tips can help make your next shoot a success.

Instructions

    1

Take candid photographs. This means shooting when the subjects aren't paying attention. While the occasional photograph of everyone staring at the camera is nice, you will get truly interesting and honest moments by taking pictures when people are unaware.

    2

Get down to your subject's level. Photographs taken from the subject's eye level are more interesting and compelling that those shot from above. Do not be afraid to crouch or to lie on the floor to get the perfect shot of children or babies.

    3

Consider the background. Often, the process of getting people into a photograph can be hectic and disorganized. If you don't notice the tree sticking out of your uncle's head until after he's gone, it will be too late. Make sure to analyze the background for distractions or weird visuals before pressing the shutter release.

    4

Fill the frame. Digital editing software will allow you to crop your images, but you should be cropping in-frame before you take the picture. Think about the elements in the photograph, and ask yourself whether everything in the frame is necessary to the final image.

    5

Understand your flash. Most on-camera flashes are effective only up to a few feet. Miscalculating the range of your flash could cost you some great photographs, so toy around with it until you are comfortable.
