How to Do Stereoscopic 3D

When you use two photographs to create the illusion of a three-dimensional space, you are creating a stereoscopic three-dimensional, or 3-D, image. It doesn't matter whether you use two photographs placed side by side or layer two images of different colors on top of each another -- the effect is the same. The illusion works by simulating normal eyesight. Two slightly offset images are placed side by side or on top of each another, simulating the way our eyes normally see the world. Our brains interpret these two images as one, creating the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface.

Instructions

    1

Set up the image. Prepare the scene, model or subject you want to photograph and position yourself in the vantage point from which you want to photograph it.

    2

Turn your camera into the portrait orientation so the long side of the image is perpendicular to the ground. This is critical, as two landscape images placed side by side will not be seen as three-dimensional, while two portrait images will. Portrait and landscape refer only to the horizontal or vertical orientation of the images, not the subject.

    3

Press the shutter button to make one image of the subject.

    4

Move the camera a few centimeters to the left or right. This can be done by shifting your weight onto one foot without picking up the other if you are holding the camera or by sliding the camera in one direction if you are using a tripod.

    5

Press the shutter button to make another image.

    6

Position the two images side by side as one photograph in an image editing program. Both images should be processed in exactly the same way from start to finish and exactly the same size. You can use a program like StereoPhoto Maker, linked to in the Resources section, to streamline the process.

    7

Display the two images next to each other. The viewer will have to cross his eyes when viewing the photos to create the three-dimensional illusion.
