Types of Creative Photo Finishing

Modern digital cameras and imaging technology make the technique of taking pictures as important as the subject. There are pieces of computer software that can help you turn a basic but well taken photograph and turn it into a piece of credible art. Photo finishing can be applied to anything from buildings to landscapes, faces and still life to people moving and even poorly exposed night shots.

Panorama

Although the technique of splicing together several different photographs of the same subject into one large collage has been around for some time, the standard of image you can create now is much higher. Panoramic work in 3-D is becoming popular with enthusiasts, software developers and the general public. It takes skill to get it right, but the results are spectacular. A static, full 360-degree circle of photography can be shot using a digital camera and, as noted on the culture blog Web Urbanist, even 3-D motion images viewable only on computer are possible.

Infrared

Buying a used DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera and using it to convert into an infrared capture device is relatively inexpensive, as explained on the website Photo Focus. They can be picked up for around $200, as of 2011, and converted at a small cost by rare companies such as Life Pixel (U.S.), Camera Clinic (Australia) or Protech (United Kingdom), as described on the art website Red Bubble. When the conversion is complete, any subject makes a good photograph because the technique itself is so versatile, and any image can be transformed into something special. Landscapes are considered particularly attractive using infrared capture because the leaves on the trees turn a dusky white.

Film Quality

The FinePix X100 digital camera, made by Fujifilm, is taking photography to a new level. This camera is unique in its ability to create film quality images previously only seen in the film industry, as claimed by Fujifilm. The difference between this type of photo and an ordinary one is that the colors can be saturated and enhanced without a loss of clarity or professionalism. A true color image can be developed successfully, too, with simple but striking results. The camera also takes other types of creative shots, such as monochromatic filtered images and enhanced dynamic range images.

Time Lapse

One of the most experimental techniques and one that can produce some creative shots, time lapse is an important finishing technique. With all the latest advances in technology, the image process starts on the digital camera and gets uploaded onto a computer, where the finishing touches are added. To create a time lapse image, the camera is set to a mode where it sits in one place, then takes a series of shots a certain time apart. When these are stitched together using software, such as Photoshop, Card Tricks or Stereo Data Maker, a special set of images are created. They can be fed together into a movie or displayed as an exhibition-style series in the order they were taken.
