How to Convert a Digital Photo to Black and White

Black and white photography reduces a photo to its essential elements such as shapes, patterns and tones. It heralds back to a simpler time before color photography existed, and it's an effective way to make others recognize your photography. Although many digital cameras have black and white modes, taking a photo in full color for later conversion captures more information and allows you to manipulate the image without a loss in quality. Plus, in-camera black and white images often look washed out with little dynamic range. With the right software, converting a digital color photo to black and white produces compelling images.

Instructions

    1

Open the photo in Photoshop or another image manipulation program that includes the channel mixer feature.

    2

Add a channel mixer adjustment layer by clicking on the "add layer" button in the layers panel.

    3

Check the "monotone" check box at the bottom-left side of the channel mixer dialog box.

    4

Slide the channel sliders in the channel mixer dialog box until red reads 70 percent, green reads 30 percent and blue reads 5 percent. This gives you a starting point for the image. Adjust the sliders to taste, but make sure the percentages add up to between 95 and 105 percent. When adjusting the sliders, try to recall the colors in the original image. The channel sliders lighten or darken the corresponding parts of the convert photo that reflects the original colors.

    5

Adjust the "constant" slider to taste. Moving it to the left darkens the photo, while moving it to the right lightens the photo. When finished, click "OK."
