How to Make Creative Photography

Creative photography involves having a talented eye when it comes to artistic dimensions, objects, shadows, colors and lighting. If you want to make your photography stand out from other photographers' work, use creative photography in your technique so that spectators are drawn to your images. Creative photography can be accomplished by the way in which you shoot your photographs, or it can be completed after the fact using a digital image-editing program.

Instructions

Shooting Creative Photography

    1

Capture unusual angles. Incorporate sharp angles and lines by the way you position your camera in relation to the objects you are shooting images of. For instance, rather than taking a picture of a building, capture the image of the building looking up so that the building appears to tower over the camera. Or, if you are taking a horizontal picture of the ocean, turn your camera sideways and make the ocean appear vertically in the image. This is unusual and creative.

    2

Focus in on, and sharpen, a particular object in a scene. If you have a bushel of apples, a creative concept is to focus on one apple out of the bunch, leaving the others in the background and slightly more blurry than the one in focus. A creative focus tells spectators where to look, and can tell a story about an object in a picture.

    3

Zoom up close with your portraits. It's nice to take a picture of a person's face, for instance, but a creative way to capture a facial portrait is to zoom in on the subject's mouth or smile, her ear or maybe her eyes. A zoomed-up image can make a powerful statement and grasp spectators' attention.

    4

Capture movement and motion by slowing the shutter speed setting on your camera. You will end up with blurred background images that are in motion, along with a main subject that is still, such as a car driving by, a drop of water being spilled from a glass or a hummingbird's wings.

Digital Enhancements

    5

Alter the color of your photographs. One option is to bold and brighten the colors so that every hue is much deeper than the original color. Another idea is to set the photography to black and white or sepia to give the photograph an old-fashioned or vintage appearance. Black and white or sepia also creates a romantic tone to the picture.

    6

Maintain the color of one item or subject in your picture, while leaving the rest in black and white or sepia. This is an effective and creative way to demand a spectator's attention. For instance, if you have a picture of the desert and you use a sepia color scheme, leave one single cactus in the background green. Or leave one of the colorful birds in its original color. When capturing images of people, you can make a subject's eyes or lips stand out by leaving the eyes green and the lips pink with the rest of the face in black and white.

    7

Add special effects with the digital editing program. Some special effects include creating fades, hazes, fogs, sun rays, moonbeams and rainbows. You can embellish an image of a tall building by adding rays from the sun beaming onto it, or give a picture of the jungle a mystical element with a hazy effect.
