How to Remove Photos From a Sticky Photo Album

Sticky photo albums and keepsake photos seem like a perfect marriage. The photos stay put and the plastic protective coating forms a comforting shield. The problem with sticky photo albums is that if you leave pictures in them for years, the photos and the album become one and the same. The glue forms seemingly unbreakable bonds with the photo paper and the acid it contains starts to weaken the integrity of both the ink and the paper. A little finessing can help you coax your memories from sticky oblivion before they're damaged beyond repair.

Instructions

    1

Peel the photo back gently at one of the corners, just enough to slide a piece of dental floss underneath.

    2

Slide waxed dental floss under the corner and work it back and forth with gentle but firm pressure to break the bonds between the glue and the photo.

    3

Heat the back of the photo album page with a hair dryer set at low heat if the glue bonds are too strong to break with the dental floss. Heat until the glue softens enough for you to slide the dental floss underneath.

    4

Dab the back of the photo with a small amount of adhesive remover spread onto a paper towel. This helps remove any stuck-on glue that could continue to degrade the photo. Use a clean paper towel to make sure you've removed all the adhesive remover. This is optional, but can extend the life of your photos.

    5

Cut the photo out of the album as a last resort. Use sharp scissors and leave the backing attached. This is the best option for photos that are too fragile or important to risk damaging. This method doesn't stop the glue's acid from further eroding the photo paper and ink, but it will allow you to scan the photo or preserve it using another method.
