List of Who to Include for a Wedding Photographer

Weddings can be chaotic for the wedding party and the photographer. It's up to the photographer to capture not just the ceremony and reception, family and close friends -- but also get snapshots of practically everyone who attended. In some cases this means shooting a few formals right after the ceremony. In other cases this involves candid photos of aunts and uncles, or great grandparents at the reception. It's up to the photographer as well as the bride and groom to put together a list of must-have shots.

Wedding Party

The wedding party, including the bride, groom, groomsmen and bridesmaids is a standard photograph for most weddings. When meeting with the bride and groom before the wedding, it's a good idea to ask the number of people in the wedding party so that you can plan what kind of lighting you will bring to the ceremony. Some weddings will have wedding parties consisting of a handful of bridesmaids and groomsmen -- while others will have many more, and shooting a large group will present different challenges than a small group. When shooting the wedding party it's important to consider whether the bride and groom want straightforward wedding formals or less posed pics. Make sure you cover these grounds verbally with the bride and groom before the big day.

Family

Get shots of the groom and family, bride and family -- and bride and groom and their family. You may also vary these shots to include the bride and groom and the groom's family -- and then the bride and groom and the bride's family. Family portraits are important for capturing the wedding day and are also often a priority for the parents of the bride and groom. Family portraits may not come up in your preliminary meeting with the bride and groom, so be sure to mention it to them at some point -- because it's a lot of people to round up during the exciting day.

Portraits

During the wedding reception try and shoot candid or posed portraits of family and friends. It's particularly important to get shots of elderly relatives. While the shots may not be high on the bride and groom's list of priorities, in cases dealing with elderly or ill relatives they are often the last professional portraits of the individual that many families will have -- and you will likely earn the thanks and future recommendations from your clients if you are able to capture these photographs. These shots can be worked into your wedding reception coverage, especially during dances and after dinner.

Children

The ring bearer, the flower girl and other children at any wedding are often an important part of the day -- and it's a good idea to get a few shots of children during the wedding and reception. In many cases these photos will earn you a chance at subsequent family portrait shoots, senior photos or more weddings.

  1. Interesting and very helpful share. At the local NYC wedding venues we will be have a small garden themed wedding. Planning the DIY ceremony is not easy but such posts are so valuable for us. Loved each and everything that you have explained here.
