How to Do Effective Headshots

You don't have to be a professional photographer to take great looking headshots. Knowing how to effectively shoot a headshot will allow you to save both time and money. In today's market, many consumer grade cameras are capable of taking professional quality photographs. These photographs can often be used in a job portfolio or on a business card. By properly setting up your subject and preparing your camera, an individual can create effective headshots.

Instructions

    1

Prepare your subject for the photo shoot. Advise the subject as to the proper clothes to wear. The clothes should match the purpose of the photo shoot. For example, if the subject will be using the headshot for business, he should wear a suit or other business attire. Allow your subject to arrange his hair to his liking.

    2

Setup your subject. Place a stool approximately 8 feet away from the background. Direct your subject to sit on the stool with her back as straight as possible with her hands resting in her lap.

    3

Properly light your subject. Place a light on each side of your subject at a diagonal angle. Adjust the lights so that no shadows appear on your subject's face. This will provide sufficient lighting to the front of your subject and eliminate possible shadows.

    4

Outfit your camera with the proper lens. Headshot photos should appear clear, compressed and slim. A special lens can achieve this. Place the 90mm lens onto your camera. Gently tug on the lens to make sure it is firmly in place.

    5

Select the proper angle. Angles are often used in photography to convey a specific mood or evoke a response. For male subjects, shoot from a lower than usual angle with the lens pointing toward their face in a slightly upward position. This gives the appearance of physical strength. For female subjects, shoot from a higher than usual angle with the lens pointing toward their face in a slightly downward position. This angle emphasizes a woman's eyes and draws attention to her beauty.

    6

Draw a specific expression out of your subject. The expression of your subject should match the purpose of the headshot photo. For example, if you are taking a high school graduation-oriented headshot photo, you want your subject to convey a youthful and playful demeanor. Hold a conversation with your subject and ask questions that guide him to a specific response.

    7

Focus the camera on your subject's eyes. This helps draw the viewer's attention. Capture the photo.
