How to Do a Salon Mount Picture

When artists and photographers hold a collective exhibition to share and critique work as a group, the event is called a "salon." In order to make the display appear seamless, certain rules are set. Each artist must mount their picture in the salon style. This involves placing the picture in a 16-inch-by-20-inch board of a set color, with specific measurements. A picture can be mounted in salon style in just a few steps.

Instructions

Purchase a 16-inch-by-20-inch foam core board. This can either be in black or white, depending on the specific competition's requirements. Foam core boards can be found at any art or craft supply store.

Set the picture down on the foam core board.

Center the picture so that there is an equal amount of space between the photo and the edge of the board on the left and right sides. Use a ruler for accurate measurements.

Make two pencil marks on the board, noting where the left and right sides of the picture end.

Move the picture upward, within the lines, until there is 1 inch more space between the bottom of the board and the picture and the top of the board and the picture.

Mark the image's final placement on the board with a pencil.

Place the picture face-down on a sheet of newspaper.

Apply mounting spray to the back of the picture. Lightly spray each corner, and once in the center.

Lift up the picture gently, and place it on the foam core within the previously marked locations.

Lightly smooth over the picture with your hands, securing it to the board.

Erase any visible pencil marks.
