Backgrounds are an important part of photography and learning how to work with them can be tricky. You may be setting up your own background for a portrait shoot or working with a natural background during outdoor photography. The background may be a subtle nuance but the colors and lighting can have a big impact on the photograph and camera. There are a few techniques to use when working with a light background.
Contrast
Ensuring that you have a lot of contrast is important for a photo with a light background. If there isn't contrast, the photo may look washed out and it may be hard to see the subject matter. Dark clothing works best if you are photographing a person. If you are photographing an object that is light in color, such as a mug or figurine, use dark colored props in the photograph. If you are working with a subject in a natural setting, you may not be able to control the contrast as much.
Camera Settings
The best way to capture a photograph in tricky situations is by manually setting your camera. If you have a lot of light colors in the photo setting, you may want to set the aperture a step or two above what the light meter on the camera suggests. If you are shooting with a digital camera, try a few test shots with varying aperture settings to see if it is producing the results you like.
Reposition Yourself or the Camera
A few inches can make a huge difference in a photograph. If you aren't able to adjust your camera settings or if you still aren't achieving the results you want, try adjusting where you're pointing the camera. Moving the camera a few centimeters may change the focus of the lens just enough so that the light balances better. Or, try changing your position so that the camera is pointing at a slightly different angle. Cameras are very sensitive to light changes and the slightest move can impact the final photograph.

Properly framing the photograph will help you work with a light background. Most cameras allow you to adjust the focal distance or zoom of a picture. If a light background is proving to be problematic, try zooming out or stepping back to incorporate more scenery. Chances are, this will add contrast and balance the lighting of the photo.
