The Effects of Photojournalism on the Public

Photojournalism allows a story to be told or accented with a photograph. In many cases, a single photo can convey a significant amount of the information or emotion of a news story without using a single word. Photojournalism is effective because it has the ability to reach the public and capture its interest with a single glance.

Information

Photojournalism tells a story, just as regular journalism does. A picture of a car crash can show the severity of the accident, give the viewer an idea of what happened and, depending on recognizable landmarks and street signs in the background, it can even give the viewer the location of the accident. The presence of an ambulance, the Jaws of Life or a covered stretcher can convey additional information about the accident. A good photojournalism picture can convey a significant amount of information to the viewer.

Emotion

Photographs can convey the emotion of a story or event to members of the general public far more effectively than words can. A picture of victims picking up the debris from a natural disaster can convey both the emotions of the human beings who have been affected by the disaster and the scale of the disaster.

Opinion

Photojournalism is an effective way of developing, manipulating or changing the public's opinion about an event. Photojournalism was heavily influential in terms of forming and changing public opinion during the Vietnam conflict. Images of children and families suffering as a direct result of U. S. involvement in the war fueled protests and helped turn public opinion against the war.

Believability

One of photojournalism's longest standing benefits is that members of the public are more likely to accept a photograph as being true or evidence of the truthfulness of a news story. Programs that allow the editing of photographs have somewhat diminished this trust, but individuals often believe what is in a picture before they will believe what is written by a person because pictures traditionally do not lie.
