Photojournalism was heavily influential in terms of forming and changing public opinion during the Vietnam conflict. Images of children and families suffering as a direct result of U. S. involvement in the war fueled protests and helped turn public opinion against the war.

One of photojournalism's longest standing benefits is that members of the public are more likely to accept a photograph as being true or evidence of the truthfulness of a news story. Programs that allow the editing of photographs have somewhat diminished this trust, but individuals often believe what is in a picture before they will believe what is written by a person because pictures traditionally do not lie.
