Black and white images are often viewed as nostalgic or artistic because of the absence of color. The mixture of black, white and gray tones can sometimes make a photo look clean and crisp. Mixing color into a black and white photo can also add an artistic touch. Painting a chair red or a sky blue in a black and white photo helps create a connection to our colored world. These colors can be added using tools in a design program. Adding color to a black and white photo can permit the photo editor to breathe new life into an image.
Instructions
- 1
Open the image in the design program by selecting "File", then "Open", and clicking on the image file. Click "OK" once chosen. If the image is a paper photo, scan it into the design program by selecting "File", then "Import" from the toolbar. Choose "Twain Acquire" and click on the scanning device. Select "Import" to begin the scan, and upload the image into the program.
2Create a duplicate layer of the image in case an undesired effect occurs. Select "Layer" from the toolbar menu, then "Duplicate Layer" to make a copy. A new layer will appear in the layer palette.
3Select the "Polygonal Lasso" or "Magic Wand" tool in the toolbox to select the areas of the black and white image to be colored. Click on the selected area with the "Magic Wand" tool by clicking on it. Outline the area with the "Polygonal Lasso" tool by clicking and dragging around the area until the two endpoints meet.
4Choose the "Eyedropper" tool in the toolbox, and select a color from the "Color Palette" to add to the selected area. Return to the toolbox and select the "Paint Bucket" tool to add the color. Click on the selected area to fill it.
5Click on the arrows in the "Opacity" and "Fill" options located in the "Layers" palette to adjust the color saturation on the selected areas. Move the sliders to the left to lessen the opacity and fill amounts. This will create a soft touch of color to the selected areas of the black and white image.
6Deselect the colored areas by pressing the "Control" or "Apple" key on the keyboard, then the "D" key. This will remove the selection borders, and reveal the finished colored areas that have been added to the black and white image. Save the image by selecting "File", then "Save" from the toolbar menu. Name the file and select a destination to save it in, then click "OK" upon completion.
