How to Print High Resolution Photos

The process of printing quality high-resolution photos begins before you capture the image. Photography in today's world is mostly discussed in terms of "pixels," miniature light-sensitive squares. Digital cameras record millions of pixels that register the brightness of the light as the photo is taken. The number of pixels in the image is referred to the image's resolution, or detail. The more pixels a camera records, the higher the resolution of the photograph; and the higher the resolution of the photo, the better the print. Since input affects output, printing a high-resolution photo begins with taking digital photos in a high-resolution setting.

Instructions

    1

Set the resolution on your camera to the highest resolution possible. The trade-off for taking high-resolution as opposed to low-resolution photographs is that a lower resolution setting allows you to fit more images on your memory card. You'll be able to fit more images on your card, but you might be unhappy with the resolution of the print because low-resolution images lack detail.

    2

Choose the file format on your camera. The file format, either TIFF or JPEG, you choose can affect the clarity of your image. TIFF images, for instance, are uncompressed and very high in quality. There are drawbacks, however. TIFF images are very large and they take a while to be written on the memory card. This means that you will only be able to fit a few TIFF images on the card, and it might be several seconds before you can take another picture. JPEG images are compressed, which means that you can fit multiple images on the card. JPEG compression doesn't affect the image resolution as long as you've set your camera on best-quality JPEG. Setting your camera on the highest-resolution, best-quality JPEG setting will yield high-quality prints.

    3

Size your high-resolution image. High-resolution images contain about 300 pixels per inch at a given size. If you want a 10-inch-wide print, the digital image should be 3,000 pixels wide (10 x 300 = 3000). To size the photo for your print specifications (8 x 10; 5 x 7, for instance), use your photo-editing computer program.

    4

Print your image on high-quality photo paper. Photo paper will produce the best printing result. Be sure to set for "photo paper" in the Printer Properties dialogue box and select "best" quality.
