Photo editing software can only get a photographer so far. Most of the work involved in producing stunning artistic photographs still happens in camera. Some photographers will dedicate all of their work just to master one photographic technique. Exploring and experimenting with artistic techniques in your own photos will help you create what seem like magic effects.
Black and White Photography
Black and white photography is much more than just a technique, it's where photography started. Artists still use black and white photography to achieve a classic, dramatic look. It also challenges the photographer to pay more attention to composition, lighting and context. Black and white is a popular choice for artistic compositions exploring surreal themes or the subject of the subconscious mind.
High Dynamic Range-technique (HDR)
High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography is more like a set of techniques that go into making one image. HDR images start with one digital photograph or a combination of several; the image is digitally processed in multiple ways to enhance the contrast, depth of field and color, among other things. The end result is an image with such intense detail that it looks like an illustration. In an artistic sense, the finished photograph evokes more than a regular photo. It replicates the way that the naked eye explores a single scene, passing over it multiple times to take in most memorable details.
High Speed Photography
High speed photography uses an SLR camera (digital or film) and a fast shutter speed to capture the details of a high speed action, like breaking glass and bullets penetrating an object. By distilling a fraction of that moment, a photograph can reveal form and structure of the subject that wouldn't be seen by the human eye.
Motion Blur Photography
Motion blur photography is used to capture action, energy and a hint of the unknown; it's a sneak peek at what the naked human eye is too slow to process. The effect can be gained by using a slower shutter speed than necessary, or by moving the camera against the direction of the action it's trying to capture. Because the technique relies on light and shape, it's used artistically to represent emotional or surreal scenes.
Smoke Art Photography
Smoke, enhanced by light and background, has a very graphic quality to it, strong, amorphous lines and shapes. Smoke has its own artistic quality to it (like architecture) so use it as a photographic technique, either as a subject, or as an added effect. It's practically a way to apply paint, in camera.
Lomography
Lomography is not only a technique of "shooting from the hip," it also comes with its own set of film cameras (based on a Russian camera called Lomo Kompakt Automat) and a trademark look. Lomo photographs are characterized by saturated colors, high contrast and a vignette-style frame that's imprinted on the film. By shooting from the hip, photographers refrain from looking through the camera's viewfinder. The artistry is in the impulsive intention behind each shot (keeping in mind that the photographer is limited by analogue film) and how the final image is processed.
Architectural Photography
When shooting architecture, much of the work is done before the photography is even conceived: the construction, the wear and tear and the surrounding landscape. When shooting architecture, the artistry is in how the photo is composed, the context it is put in and the way that the photographer chooses to show off its features.
