Install a digital photo editor with "Dodge" and "Burn" capabilities. You will find this functionality in Adobe's Photoshop as well as free solutions like Paint.net and GIMP.
2Load the photograph into the work area of your software. This is usually done by clicking "File" and then "Open."
3Select the "Dodge" tool. Dodging a photograph is an old darkroom technique that lessens the exposure of a print in certain areas. Dodge the areas of your photo that need to be lighter, such as your subject's face.
4Select the "Burn" tool. Burning is the opposite of dodging, in that burned areas of a photograph will experience more intense exposure. Burn the bright areas of the photo to draw more attention to the now lighter subject.
5Save the photograph once the desired results have been reached.
