A great photographer may be able to take a good photo of anything, but almost every professional photographer has a specialty. That specialty can range from family portraits to photos of great food, and each type of photography has its own special challenges. Here is a brief introduction to five types of photographers.
Portrait
Portrait photographers often work from a studio. They specialize in individual and family portraits, which are often taken in conjunction with a special event, such as a graduation or birth or for holiday photos. Many portrait photographers also have favorite sites where they enjoy taking portrait photographs, and many will also accommodate special requests to have a photo session in a family's home or favorite location.
Fashion
Fashion photographers work in the fashion industry, which includes fashion shows and fashion magazines as well as industry publications for hair and makeup design. Fashion photographers might also specialize in photos for the movie and/or music industry; they would take photos for album covers, band publicity, and related publications.
Wedding
Wedding photographers work on site at the wedding location. They may take photos only during the wedding ceremony, but many wedding photographers offer packages that offer engagement photo sessions as well as photos taken during the wedding ceremony and reception. It's important to find a wedding photographer with a style that matches the style of the wedding; some photographers are very traditional, others have a more modern, photojournalistic approach.
Action/Events
Action photographers cover everything from sports to inaugurations, and many action/events photographers will find their most lucrative business in newspapers and magazines. Most action/event photographers will specialize in a particular area: sports, perhaps, or political events or human conditions. Many events photographers will end up with travel photography assignments that can take them around their region or around the world.
Food/Objects
Food photographers take photos of food for use in magazines, websites and cookbooks. Object photographers do the same with nonfood items, styling and photographing them for catalogs, magazines, marketing publications and other methods of advertisement. Food photography can be one of the most challenging photographic endeavors, both in capturing an image of food to appear both fresh and appealing and in breaking into the business of food photography. It can, however, also be very lucrative if the photographer is able to get contracts with popular food publications.
