Backdrops play an integral role in portrait photography. Many photographers prefer to own multiple backdrops in different colors to add variety to their photographs. Though essentially simply a large sheet of fabric, backdrops can cost upwards of $100 each from photography equipment dealers. However, you can make professional-grade backdrops yourself at a fraction of the price using Rit dye and large sheets of fabric.
Instructions
- 1
Cut fabric down to desired length. Do not sew sheets of fabric together to make a larger backdrop, as the resulting seams will appear unsightly in photographs. A standard backdrop size is 6 feet by 9 feet; this is readily available in most fabric stores.
2Wash fabric thoroughly in hot water. This prepares the fabric to take the dye by removing any dirt, stains and spots that may cause the fabric to become discolored. Do not dry the fabric or allow it to cool.
3Heat 6 gallons of water to 140 degrees, and pour the heated water into the tote. Thoroughly mix an entire bottle of Rit dye into the hot water. Mix 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent into the dye solution. Stir with the paint stirrer until dye and detergent are completely mixed together.
4Submerge wet fabric into the dye solution with a paint stirrer. To prevent uneven coloring, do not allow fabric to ball up or float on top of the dye solution. Fabric must remained submerged.
5Stir fabric in the dye solution. For lighter shades, stir for 10 minutes. Dark shades may require up to one hour of stirring. Periodically check to see if fabric has reached the desired color.
6Remove the fabric from the dye solution. Rinse the fabric in warm water, then alternate between warm and cold rinses until the water runs clear. Once the water runs clear, it is safe to dry and use your finished backdrop.
