How to Make Textures With Photos

Textures add variety and dimension to digital illustrations in a way that gradients and brushes cannot. While there are many methods to achieve almost anything with graphics software, an effective technique uses a photograph as a starting point. Any photograph can be turned into a texture, regardless of subject, as long as it has an interesting pattern of lights and darks.

Instructions

    1

Open the photograph you will be using to create a texture. If it is a color photograph, use the "Desaturate" command from the "Image>Adjustments" menu to remove the color information. The image needs to be pretty washed out. Open the "Levels" tool (also from the "Image>Adjustments" menu) and adjust the input sliders below the histogram until the image is mostly whites and light grays. The more dark grays and black you have, the deeper your texture will be, according to the Academy of Art University's "Digital Photo and Photoshop" class.

    2

Press "Ctrl" plus "A" to select the entire image, then press "Ctrl" plus "C" to copy it. Choose "Window>Channels" from the main menu to open the Channels palette. Press the "Create New Channel" button to create a new alpha channel and press "Ctrl" plus "V" to paste the image into the channel you just created. Click the Channel labeled "RGB" in the Channels list to return to the main image.

    3

Choose "Render>Lighting Effects" from the Filter menu. Choose "Spotlight" from the "Light Type" drop-down list. In the image preview window, use the adjustment handles to make sure the whole image is covered by the Spotlight. Drag the line showing the direction of the light so that it's coming from the top left. Use the sliders to adjust the intensity and focus of the light until you are happy with how the image is illuminated. Choose the alpha channel created earlier from the "Texture Channel" drop-down menu. Click "OK" to apply the lighting effects.

    4

Press "Ctrl" plus "A" to select the entire image and "Ctrl" plus "C" to copy it. Create a new channel with the "New Channel" button on the Channels palette and press "Ctrl" plus "V" to paste the image into the channel you just created. Choose the "Save" command from the file menu to save your work.
