In time lapse photography, a long event is photographed many times throughout its duration. These images are then strung together into a sequence to create a portrait of that event. The creation of a mandala is a perfect event for time lapse photography, as it takes a long time and produces a beautiful result. Arrive before the construction of the mandala begins. You need to scout the location to find the best place to set up your camera. If necessary, ask those working on the mandala where the best place for you to set up your camera would be. Also ask if photography is allowed, as the religious nature of creating a mandala may prohibit it.
2Walk the perimeter of the area where the mandala will be created. You are looking for a vantage point that will allow your camera to take in the whole scene as it progresses.
3Set your camera up on a tripod in your chosen location. The location should be isolated enough to keep your camera equipment from getting jostled or knocked over, but close enough to take in the details of the scene.
4Attach your intervalometer and set it to between 30 seconds and one minute. Because creating a mandala can take hours or even days, this interval allows you to get a plenty of images without capturing frames where little has changed.
5Start the intervalometer once the creation of the mandala has begun.
6Wait by your camera until the mandala, and your time lapse photography, is complete.
7Transfer the images to your computer and assemble them into a chronological sequence using video editing software.
