Photography Making Ideas

As with any creative endeavor, photography can fall victim to complacence and routine if photographers resist opportunities to push their boundaries through experimentation. Taking many pictures of similar subject matter in a controlled environment, such as a studio, can yield repetitive results and ultimately become unchallenging for the photographer and boring for the viewer. In order to hone their skills and improve their talents, photographers must develop different methods to inspire themselves and constantly generate new ideas.

Experiment With Different Lenses

Lenses are usually the most expensive investment photographers can make, but the impact they have on your photographs is immediate and profound. Photographing the same subject in the same conditions while trying lenses with different focal lengths will yield drastically different results. The delicate detail depicted in a photograph taken with a telephoto lens strongly contrasts with a vast landscape captured with a wide-angle lens, but both can lend something entirely unique to a photographer's portfolio and demonstrate a well-rounded shooting perspective by the photographer.

Vary Your Subjects

If you've photographed nature and the outdoors exclusively for a long period of time under natural lighting conditions, take some time to switch to indoor photography. Ask friends and family to volunteer as your subject for an afternoon, and try out some new environments with simulated lighting conditions.

Experiment With Different Liighting Styles

Studio photography and portraiture are important skills for any photographer, but experimenting with lighting placements will highlight different aspects of a subject's body and facial features, entirely changing the mood of a photograph. Dimming or brightening lights can also create a distinct point of view through the use of shadow and overexposure, making even the most routine portrait something unique.

Join a Photo Club

There are hundreds of organizations across the country, in small towns to big cities, that meet regularly to discuss all things photography, critique each other's work, discuss the latest equipment, and are open to everyone from beginners to seasoned veterans and professionals. Some of these clubs organize field trips to travel and photograph together. Simply watching how others differ in their approach to photographing the same subject or environment can inspire you to try something entirely different as well.
