Do you know how aperture, ISO and shutter speed relate to each other? Have you recently acquired a digital SLR camera, and are overwhelmed by the features? Maybe you've been happily snapping photos on full manual setting for some time, but would like to learn more about the vast capabilities of your camera. Taking digital photography classes is a great way to get to know the ins and outs of your camera and to further your photography skills.

Camera Stores

Many local camera shops offer workshops and classes on digital photography. Some courses focus on specific camera models (Canon Rebel XSI, Nikon D80, etc.), so you can receive specialized instruction on your particular camera.

Community Colleges and Universities

Consider enrolling in digital photography classes offered at your local college. Most colleges offer a variety of digital photography courses available to everyone in the community. Look for listings under "adult learning" or "extension courses."

Online Classes

Online photography schools, such as the Picture Perfect School of Photography, conduct quality digital photography courses entirely online (see Resources). These courses are taught by professionals and can be as expensive as college courses. Free, self-guided classes and tutorials are available on websites such as digital-photography-school.com (see Resources).

Photography Schools

This is by far the best option for serious aspiring photographers. Digital photography classes are often open even to those not enrolled in a formal degree program. Taking classes at a photography school is also good for meeting people who have their fingers on the pulse of your local photography community.

Considerations

Most digital photography classes do not provide a camera for you to use. Some courses require you to have a current version of Photoshop or other image-editing software available to use outside of class. Carefully check the course requirements prior to enrolling.
