How to Clean Inside a Vivitar 75-205 Lens

Vivitar's 75-205 lens is a discontinued manual-focus lens that has an adjustable focal length between 75mm and 205mm. It utilizes standard SLR mounts that make it usable by SLR cameras today. Because they're prone to scratches, lenses should be handled with great care and should only be cleaned when dirt becomes apparent. Preventive measures are the best defense in keeping your lenses at their optimum performance. Keep lenses capped when not in use or attach a clear filter to the lens to take the brunt of dirt and the elements.

Instructions

    1

Place your camera on a steady and clean work surface with the Vivitar lens facing upward. Press the lens release button and turn your lens counterclockwise to detach. Consult your camera's user manual for lens release button location (most commonly the button is right beside the lens attachment on the body of the camera). If you have a cover for your camera's body, screw it into place by turning it clockwise until secure. This cover will protect the camera's sensitive shutter from dust and debris.

    2

Hold the Vivitar 75-205 by its main housing and gently wipe the inside glass of the lens with a lens brush. Pay particular attention to edges of the lens where dust may collect. In the same fashion, wipe the outer glass of the lens with the lens brush. Do not risk substituting another kind of brush for one made for this purpose. A scratched lens will permanently mar the visual integrity of photos taken with that lens.

    3

Rub a lens cloth (or one made for eyeglasses will do) gently in small circles on both glasses of the lens to remove any oils or smudges that may be present.

    4

Remove the camera's body cover from the lens attachment. Reattach the Vivitar lens by inserting the inner lens into the camera's body and turning it clockwise. A small click will be heard when the lens is properly attached. Place the lens cap on the lens glass whenever it's not in use. Screw the lens protector on the inner lens whenever the lens is unattached from the camera to protect the inner lens.
