Coin collecting is a hobby practiced around the world, with collectors interested in acquiring both modern and historical coins. Taking photos of the coins in your collection is a good way of cataloguing them; however, simply placing the coins on a table and shooting them will not create ideal results. With the proper system in place, you can take sharp images with no outer shadow; this will display your coins as eye-pleasingly as possible.

Place the coin on the light panel.
2Position your camera over the coin, using a tripod or stand to hold the camera. Even the smallest natural hand movement will cause blurring when zooming this close.
3Look through the viewfinder, or at the digital display, and rotate the coin so that the bottom of the coin is aligned with the bottom edge of the photo.
4Position a lamp with a fluorescent bulb beside the panel to provide lighting, moving the lamp to the location that best shows off the details of the coin being shot. The shape of the raised areas will change the ideal location from coin to coin.
5Turn off your camera's flash and set it to shoot with a short timer. A timer ensures you do not move the camera at the moment the shot is taken. Only a few seconds is needed, so use your shortest timer settings.
6Take multiple shots of the coin to ensure that you get a good shot.
7Turn the coin over and repeat to get a shot of the back of the coin.
