An 18 percent gray card is a great tool for both amateur and professional photographers. The card is painted a specific shade of gray that reflects 18 percent of the light that reaches it. Because a camera does not see in color, this is perfect for adjusting a camera's light meter. This adjustment helps prevent over- and under-exposed film. Set the camera to manual mode. If the camera is in automatic mode, it will adjust the white balance itself even after it is changed.
2Position the gray card in front of the subject being photographed. Have a model or assistant hold the card so that it is vertical. A leaning card will cause problems with the white balance.
3Take a picture of the card. The card does not need to fill the picture, but it should take up a substantial portion. If the camera is a film camera, this picture will act as a color correction reference for the film developer. If the camera is a digital camera, continue to the next step.
4Press the "Play" button on the camera to view the picture.
5Open the settings menu, and select the option for editing white balance. Refer to the camera's instruction manual if necessary.
6Position the white balance eyedropper over the gray card. Select the apply option. If the camera uses a stylus and touchscreen combination, touch the gray card with the stylus.
7Save the setting.
