How to Appear Dominant in Photos

Good composition can make all the difference between a boring photograph and one that catches your eye. Learning how to make yourself or your subject more dominant in photographs can enhance your photographs' aesthetic appeal. Professional photographers call the dominant feature of a photograph the picture's "focal point." A few techniques can add emphasis and help you appear more dominant in each photograph.

Zoom and Lighting

Making yourself appear more dominant in a photograph requires having the photographer zoom in on you, or standing closer to the camera to eliminate the background from within the frame of the shot. Spot lighting is another way to emphasize yourself as the main subject. Photographic lighting is used in various ways to enhance pictures, and lights aimed at you can highlight your face while the background of the picture stays dark.

Backgrounds

Use backgrounds to your best advantage. Set up photographs so that you are standing or sitting in front of a background with a large degree of contrast. For example, light-colored clothing would work well against the dark background of buildings in an urban setting, while dark clothing would add contrast and make you stand out more against a sandy beach or other light-colored landscape or backdrop. For a simplified solution, have the photographer isolate you against a plain background, such as the side wall of a building with no doors or windows showing. Indoors, plain walls work well, or a hanging sheet of cloth or paper can also serve as a plain background.

Depth of Field

Have your photographer set the camera to use a shallow depth of field. This blurs out the foreground and background of your photograph, leaving a narrow band remaining in focus, which can isolate you as the key focal point of the photo. Accomplish this by setting the camera's aperture to its smallest setting, which is indicated by the lowest f-stop aperture number. The mechanism for changing the settings varies, depending on the camera model.

Editing the Photograph

Edit your photo to make the subject more dominant. If you are working with an existing digital photograph, open the file in photo-editing software and use the crop function to cut out unnecessary background details to place more emphasis on you as the main subject of your photograph. Photo-editing software will also allow you to darken the background or make it look out-of-focus, allowing the viewer's eye to seek the lightest and sharpest area of the picture, which would be you as the main subject.
