Whether they're digital or hand-wound film, all cameras take a picture by letting in and capturing light from a scene. At night or in a dark studio, photographers can use the lack of light to their advantage and create a one-of-a-kind glow on their subject. Use a variety of lights to capture various glows, from bright streaks across the pictures to a subtle highlight on an object. This glow technique can be used for any kind of photography, including promotional pictures and abstract art shots.
Instructions
- 1
Find a dark location. A studio without windows will be an ideal location, as well as a field at night. If you're working outside, ensure there aren't any street lights overhead or a busy street nearby where cars will drive by.
2Adjust the camera settings for the photos by moving it to manual mode. Set the shutter speed to be open for about 15 to 30 seconds. The aperture should be set between 8 and 11 f-stop. Move the ISO to a low setting of about 100.
3Secure the camera to a tripod to keep it steady.
4Create an overall glow on objects or people by shining a flashlight with a wide beam on them. Hold the light on the specific item you want to highlight. After the photographer clicks the camera, hold the light steady until the shutter closes again. Use ambient lights, such as a cityscape at night, to provide a background for the shot while painting a subject in the foreground with this glow. Also, try highlighting multiple items in one shot by holding the light on an object for a few seconds, turning it off and then shining it on something else.
5Make a glowing streak of light for the photographer using a light with a narrow beam, such as an LED light, laser pointer or flashlight. Stand in front of the camera holding the light. When the shutter opens, run around the area with the light in your hand, draw a design in the air or trace an object with the light. The camera will capture the trail of the light as it moves through the space, creating a glowing photograph reminiscent of a neon sign.
