Each photographed portrait tells a story and digital photography allows you to create several stories in a single photo-shooting session. The talent and face of your model is important for the quality of your photographs, but it is also up to your capacity and technique to arrange the lights and camera settings to make the best of each pose and obtain the desired effects.
Background and Composition
Choose the background and composition for your photographs to create a setting for your model. Even if you are photographing only the portrait, the background plays an important role in setting the atmosphere. The background may be real or artificial, but it should be consistent with the theme of the photographs you want to take and relate to your model. Select a piece of black or white cloth as your background if you want to emphasize the model's portrait. Arrange the composition and the position of the model's head, which can face the camera or turn slightly away from it.
Facial Expression
The face of the model is the center of interest in portrait photography, but you can focus on an area of the face, such as the lips or the eyes. Let your model know about the theme of the photographs and ask her to think about things related to the story. You may ask her about the feelings the theme triggers. Alternatively, dictate to your model different words you associate with the theme and ask her to change her facial expression according to the words she hears. For instance, say contempt and see the reaction of the model. If you are not satisfied with the model's reactions, use some intensifiers, like severe contempt. Before you start asking for different facial expressions, ask your model to relax her face completely, starting with her forehead and finishing with her jaws.
Position of the Model
The position of the model's body influences the composition of the photograph. Experiment with different body positions and observe how they influence the facial expression and the composition of your picture. For relaxed or pensive facial expressions, have your model seated. If you want to obtain dynamic shots, have your model standing.
Lighting and Setting

If you are a beginner, choose the automatic setting and experiment with manual exposure for future shots.
