Instead, take note of the way the photo makes you feel on your initial examination. This will help you to establish your interpretation of the work. Use phrases such as, "Upon first look, the photograph made me feel ..." or "Initially, the photograph provoked ..." Also, state what you feel the artist's purpose is in taking the photograph. What message is the artist trying to relay?
2Evaluate the artistic aspect of the photograph. Consider things such as the framing of the subject and the composition of the photograph. Write whether you feel the approach to the photograph was completed in a creative way. Also, was the medium used appropriate to the nature of the photograph? Would the photograph be more effective as a black-and-white?
3Analyze the technical aspects of the photograph. Did the photographer use the correct exposure and aperture settings? Are the subject and background lit properly? What about focus? Is the photograph blurred in areas? Did the photographer use proper depth of field to give the photograph more impact and appeal or is the photograph flat? Remember, the rules of photography are loose. They are essentially guidelines that are meant to be pushed by personal interpretation.
