How to Make Things Sparkle in CS4

A sparkle is a type of lighting that reflects and shines on a particular object or person. You may want to focus on a person's teeth in a photo to reflect sparkling, shiny teeth. You may also want to add sparkles to make the picture more magical or to present a good wax job on a car. You can create a sparkling name or add sparkles to a magic wand. Adobe Photoshop allows its users to create sparkles with a brush.

Instructions

Launch Photoshop. Click "File," then "New." In the window that appears, set the width to 200 pixels and height to 200 pixels. Set the color mode to RGB color, and click "OK." Double-click the foreground box on the tools palette, and select black.

Select the brush tool from the tools palette, or press "B" on the keyboard. On the brush panel, click the third icon with three brushes to open the brush palette window. Click the "Brush Presets" tab, scroll down and select the size 70 star brush. Click several stars on the canvas using this brush to add sparkles.

Reopen the brush palette, and click the icon with lines and an arrow pointing down near the upper right corner. A drop-down window appears. Click "Assorted Brushes." Click "Append" to add the new brushes to the existing brushes. Go back to the brush palette, scroll down and select the size 50 star brush. Make more random brush clicks on the canvas to add more sparkles.

Click "Edit" on the menu bar. Choose "Define Brush Preset." Type a name, such as "Sparkle Brush," for your new brush, and click "OK."

Open the image to which you want to add sparkles by clicking "File" then "Open." Click the icon showing a turned-up corner at the bottom of the layers tab to create a new layer above the background or first layer. Give the new layer a name, such as "Sparkle."

Set the foreground color to white. Open the brush palette again, and click "Shape Dynamics" and "Scattering." Move the "Spacing" bar to space out the sparkles, and close the window. Right-click the "Sparkle" layer, and click "Duplicate Layer."

Add a glow to the sparkles on the duplicate layer. Click "Filter" on the menu bar, then "Blur" and then "Gaussian Blur." Enter 3.8 pixels for the radius. Select the top layer on the layers tab. Click the second icon, "fx," at the bottom of the layers tab, and select "Outer Glow." Under "Structure," select a color for the glow. Click the color drop-down box below "Noise." Lower the opacity of the glow. Click "OK."

Click to add sparkles to your photo image. Save the file when finished.
